SFA Observatory to host public viewing session


NACOGDOCHES, Texas — The Stephen F. Austin State University Observatory will host its next public viewing session 7 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 24, weather permitting, giving visitors the opportunity to see the night sky like they have never seen it before.

Opening its doors to the public periodically throughout the year, the observatory is home to over 15 telescopes, including one formerly used by NASA.

SFA’s Office of Multicultural Affairs to host second annual Women’s Empowerment Summit


NACOGDOCHES, Texas — Stephen F. Austin State University’s Office of Multicultural Affairs will host its second annual Women’s Empowerment Summit from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. March 2 in the Baker Pattillo Student Center Twilight Ballroom.

The summit will focus on empowering women from various backgrounds and include sessions where speakers will discuss empowerment in areas such as professional development, education, etiquette, health, body image and more.

SFA’s School of Human Sciences launches online bachelor’s degree program


NACOGDOCHES, Texas — Stephen F. Austin State University’s School of Human Sciences has launched a new degree program that allows students to earn a four-year degree completely online.

The program, which became available to SFA students in fall 2017, offers an entirely online Bachelor of Science in human sciences with an emphasis in human development and family studies. All core and elective courses are available online.

Association for Business Communication-Southwestern U.S. names SFA lecturer Outstanding Business Educator


NACOGDOCHES, Texas — The Association for Business Communication-Southwestern U.S. has posthumously awarded Judi Biss, former Stephen F. Austin State University lecturer in the Rusche College of Business, the 2018 Outstanding Business Educator Award.

Biss began teaching at SFA in 1999 and continued serving for almost 20 years. She taught various business communication courses and was an advocate for undergraduate and graduate research.

SFA School of Theatre to present ‘(Biedermann and) The Firebugs’


NACOGDOCHES, Texas – There’s a line in the show: “ … the best camouflage of all, in my opinion, is the plain and simple truth. Because nobody ever believes it.”

Dr. Richard Jones had long forgotten that line in Max Frisch’s play “(Biedermann and) The Firebugs,” but he remembered this theme from when he first read the play more than 30 years ago.

SFA education students to present research at national conference


School of Human Sciences at SFA participates in annual ‘Chairished’ Blessings fundraiser


NACOGDOCHES, Texas — More than 100 Stephen F. Austin State University students enrolled in the School of Human Sciences applied their skills during the annual “Chairished” Blessings fundraiser held recently at the Nacogdoches Exposition and Civic Center.

Interior design, merchandising and hospitality students were among the participants during this year’s event and played active roles in making it a success.

NOBLE Scholar, LOT Crew events canceled for remainder of school year


NACOGDOCHES, Texas — The Nacogdoches County’s Opportunity for a Better Learning Experience banquet scheduled for March 30 at Stephen F. Austin State University has been canceled due to concerns about the coronavirus, or COVID-19, pandemic.

The Leaders of Tomorrow, or LOT Crew, day of service on April 11 at Brooks-Quinn-Jones Elementary, public safety field trip on April 14 at the C.L. Simon Recreation Center and convocation on April 28 at SFA also have been canceled.
