SFA Opera Theater to present Mozart’s ‘The Magic Flute’


NACOGDOCHES, Texas – A fairy tale for all ages is what the Stephen F. Austin State University School of Music and School of Theatre promise when they present W.A. Mozart’s “The Magic Flute” as this year’s SFA Opera Theater.

Taking the stage at 7:30 p.m. Thursday through Saturday, April 12 through 14, in W.M. Turner Auditorium, “The Magic Flute” is a perennial favorite for audiences and musicians alike, according to Dr. Deborah Dalton, associate professor of voice at SFA and stage director of the opera.

Parent Teacher Organization for SFA’s Early Childhood Lab hosting fundraiser


NACOGDOCHES, Texas — Members of the Parent Teacher Organization for Stephen F. Austin State University’s Early Childhood Lab are selling to-go fajita dinners for their spring fundraiser.

Each dinner includes fajitas, beans, rice, three tortillas and a cookie. La Carreta restaurant is sponsoring the meals.

Tickets cost $10 and will be available until April 13. To purchase a ticket and order a meal, contact Dr. Lori Harkness, director of the Early Childhood Lab, at (936) 468-4006.

NACOGDOCHES, Texas — Dr. Kevin Langford, associate professor of biology and pre-health professions program director at Stephen F. Austin State University, will be the interviewer during the 2018 Archie McDonald Speaker Series.

SFA undergraduate wins Social Work Student of the Year Award


NACOGDOCHES, Texas — Shelby Kolek, Stephen F. Austin State University social work undergraduate, recently received the National Association of Social Workers East Texas Chapter Undergraduate Social Work Student of the Year Award.

Kolek, who has served as vice president for both the School of Social Work Student Council and the Student Association of Social Workers, felt humbled when she found out she received the award. “I was shocked and honored that Dr. Copeland even nominated me, and it was even more amazing when I found out I won.”

SFA Sylvans clinch Southern Forestry Conclave championship


he Sylvans, Stephen F. Austin State University’s timbersports team, claimed victory at the 61st annual Southern Forestry Conclave hosted last week by Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College in Tifton, Georgia, making this the winningest six-year period in the organization’s 61 year history.   

“I could not have asked for a better group of students,” said Dr. Jeremy Stovall, associate professor of forestry and Sylvans faculty adviser. “They worked tirelessly through much adversity and earned a hard win.”

SFA’s Trombone Choir performance part of international observance


NACOGDOCHES, Texas – The 20-piece Trombone Choir at Stephen F. Austin State University will perform a variety of music when ensemble director Dr. Deb Scott presents the students in concert at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 10, in Cole Concert Hall on the SFA campus.

SFA senior theatre student to direct ‘Nine’


NACOGDOCHES, Texas – The Stephen F. Austin State University School of Theatre will present the one-act play “Nine” at 7:30 p.m. Friday, April 6, and at 2 and 7:30 p.m. Saturday, April 7, in the Downstage Theatre on the SFA campus.

Written by Jane Shepard, “Nine” will be directed by Lewisville senior theatre major Marie Phillips. The play is about two women who are chained to a room by unseen forces. Exercise and discussing their memories help them get through the day. As they hang on to life, they explore truth, bonds and hope, according to Phillips.

Concert at SFA to feature new works of Texas composers


NACOGDOCHES, Texas – The Texas New Music Ensemble will make its first appearance on the Stephen F. Austin State University campus when the newly formed group performs at 6 p.m. Thursday, April 5, in Cole Concert Hall.
