SFA jazz concert to feature works by East Texas favorite Dotson


NACOGDOCHES, Texas – A concert by the Swingin’ Axes and Swingin’ Aces jazz bands at Stephen F. Austin State University will feature tunes by jazz greats Chuck Mangione, Pat Metheny and Maynard Ferguson, along with works by guest artist Dennis Dotson, when the student ensembles perform at 7:30 p.m. Friday, April 20, in W.M. Turner Auditorium.

Highlighting the Axes’ program are Dotson’s “Close to Home” and “Civic Duty,” according to Dr. Deb Scott, director of the Swingin’ Axes. Dotson, a trumpet player, will perform these tunes and others with the Axes.

Hospitality Shindig fundraising event to feature Kentucky Derby themed dining experience


NACOGDOCHES, Texas — Stephen F. Austin State University students in the hospitality administration program are hosting the Hospitality Shindig fundraising event from 6 to 9 p.m. April 20 at The Fredonia Hotel in Nacogdoches.

This event will feature a five-course Kentucky Derby themed dining experience and silent auction. Prior to dinner, guests will have the opportunity to participate in a one-hour reception, which includes a cash bar.

The shindig will serve as a fundraiser to support student scholarships, field trips, conferences and faculty development activities.

Food, nutrition and dietetics students gain real-world experience through simulation


NACOGDOCHES, Texas — Gathered in an intensive care unit in Stephen F. Austin State University’s DeWitt School of Nursing, Justin Pelham, clinical instructor in the School of Human Sciences, explained medical equipment to a group of senior nutrition and dietetics students as part of a nutrition simulation.

SFA computer science students attend cyber security conference


Students from Stephen F. Austin State University’s Department of Computer Science recently attended the Women in Cybersecurity conference in Chicago.

Dedicated to bringing together and supporting women in the field, the conference gave students the opportunity to sit in on technical presentations from major companies in the field and participate in mentoring sessions and workshops.

Great-grandson enhances SFA’s C.E. Lowery scholarship


NACOGDOCHES, Texas — Clayton W. Lowery recently contributed to the C.E. “Charley” Lowery Memorial Scholarship on behalf of his father, John L. Lowery, and his grandfather, O.L. Lowery. His grandfather created the scholarship with the Stephen F. Austin State University Alumni Association in October 1983 honoring his great-grandfather, the late C.E. Lowery of Nacogdoches.

SFA’s Steel Band to perform spring concert


NACOGDOCHES, Texas – The Steel Band at Stephen F. Austin State University will play a number of favorites when the student ensemble performs at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, April 18, in Cole Concert Hall on the SFA campus.

Directed by Dr. Ben Tomlinson, adjunct professor of percussion at SFA, the Steel Band will perform such popular works as “Dus in deh Face,” “Conga Line,” “Soca Tatie,” “Jump in the Line,” “Soca Pressure,”  “Kiss the Girl,” “Fiesta Latina,” “Yellow Bird” and “Marianne.”

SFA to recognize Teaching Excellence Award recipients


NACOGDOCHES, Texas — Stephen F. Austin State University will recognize seven faculty members during its Teaching Excellence Awards Convocation at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 10, in the Baker Pattillo Student Center Regents’ Suite A on the university campus. This event is free and open to the public.

SFA Gardens to host Art in the Garden


NACOGDOCHES, Texas — Make plans to join Stephen F. Austin State University art education majors to create sculptures, paintings, collages, eco-art and more from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday, April 21, at the Pineywoods Native Plant Center, located at 2900 Raguet St.

“This is a new event at SFA Gardens, and we hope that adults and families with children will join us in the garden to create masterpieces and learn from SFA art students,” said Elyce Rodewald, education coordination at SFA Gardens. “This will be a fun and inspiring way to celebrate spring and Earth Day.”

SFA Wind Ensemble to perform works of composers Mackey, Schwantner


NACOGDOCHES, Texas – Works by composers John Mackey and Joseph Schwantner will be featured when the Wind Ensemble at Stephen F. Austin State University presents the program “Eventide” at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 17, in W.M. Turner Auditorium on the SFA campus.

“The pieces on this concert share a nighttime theme,” said Fred J. Allen, director of bands at SFA.

The featured work is Mackey’s “The Night Garden.”
