Governor appoints Childress SFA student regent


NACOGDOCHES, Texas — Kate Childress, a Stephen F. Austin State University graduate student from Lumberton, enjoys serving others, and in her new role as student regent, she will have the opportunity to impact the campus community in myriad ways.

Gov. Greg Abbott appointed Childress to serve in this position, and her term as student regent began in June 2018 and will end in May 2019. She graduated from SFA in May 2017 with a Bachelor of Science in psychology and has continued her SFA education, now working toward a master’s degree in student affairs.

SFA STEM Center accepting registration for iMAS Academy


NACOGDOCHES, Texas — The Stephen F. Austin State University STEM Research and Learning Center is accepting registration for a weeklong STEM camp for students entering sixth through eighth grade.

During Investigations in Math and Science Academy, or iMAS Academy, students spend the week participating in engaging, hands-on activities designed to help them develop a variety of skills while highlighting the diverse careers available in STEM disciplines.

SFA Gardens’ Theresa and Les Reeves Lecture Series to feature Moody Gardens director


NACOGDOCHES, Texas — Stephen F. Austin State University’s SFA Gardens will host the monthly Theresa and Les Reeves Lecture Series at 7 p.m. June 14 in the Brundrett Conservation Education Building at the Pineywoods Native Plant Center, located at 2900 Raguet St. Danny Carson, director of gardens at Moody Gardens in Galveston, will present “Behind the Scenes at Moody Gardens: Why 1,100 Employees is Never Enough.”

SFA mass communication faculty member wins national awards


NACOGDOCHES, Texas — A television program written and produced by a Stephen F. Austin State University mass communication faculty member recently received a silver and bronze award during the 39th annual Telly Awards.

Dr. Linda Thorsen Bond wrote and produced the Longmont Channel video, "Hot Time in the Old Town - 1925 Sylvan Supper." The video received both the Silver Telly Award for the People's Telly - TV Programs/Segments and Bronze Award in the General-History television category.

SFA Rusche College of Business recognizes faculty members with annual awards


NACOGDOCHES, Texas — Stephen F. Austin State University’s Rusche College of Business honored faculty members for their teaching excellence, innovation, research and service.

Among the honorees were Drs. Gina Harden, Mark Scanlan, Calee Jo Holcombe, Carol Wright, Jason Reese and Treba Marsh.

Harden, assistant professor in the Department of Management and Marketing, was recognized with the college’s Marlin C. Young Teaching Excellence Award.

Student stage managers keep SummerStage Festival running smoothly


NACOGDOCHES, Texas – While many of their peers are taking summer vacations or lighter summer class loads, SFA theatre students Yanelly Vargas and Kylie Wakulat are deep in production mode for this year’s SummerStage Festival at Stephen F. Austin State University.

Annual 12x12 event raises funds for SFA art scholarships, grants


NACOGDOCHES, Texas – Work is well underway to make this year’s 12x12 scholarship fundraiser for the Friends of the Visual Arts at Stephen F. Austin State University another success.

The silent auction features 12-by-12-inch pieces of art created by approximately 70 artists from Nacogdoches, Lufkin and other areas of East Texas. Anyone may silently bid on the unique one-of-a-kind pieces, according to Crystal Hicks, event committee chairwoman.

SFA’s interior design program receives reaccreditation


NACOGDOCHES, Texas — The Stephen F. Austin State University Bachelor of Science in interior design program has been awarded the Council for Interior Design Accreditation.

With this accreditation, which attests to program quality, interior design students can be confident the program meets the rigor of peer review and will help them develop skills and knowledge required to practice interior design, according to the CIDA accreditation letter. CIDA representatives visited the university in September 2017 to conduct a program review and assessment.

SFA names new athletic director


NACOGDOCHES, Texas – Ryan Ivey has been appointed director of athletics at Stephen F. Austin State University by President Baker Pattillo. Currently serving as athletic director at Austin Peay State University in Clarksville, Tennessee, Ivey will join the SFA athletics department on July 1.
 

Former SFA music educators, alumnus inducted into state jazz hall of fame


NACOGDOCHES, Texas – Among music industry professionals and educators in Texas and throughout the U.S., the name of Darrell Holt is synonymous with jazz excellence.

The late Holt, former associate professor of music at Stephen F. Austin State University, is among the inductees in the inaugural class of the Texas Jazz Educators Association’s Hall of Fame. The announcement was made at last month’s Texas Music Educators Association convention in San Antonio where some of Holt’s former colleagues from SFA, former students and admirers from across the nation heard the news.
