SFA hosts fourth Barrio Writers literature program


NACOGDOCHES, Texas — Literature was the name of the game last week as students from the Nacogdoches Independent School District participated in the fourth Barrio Writers summer program at Stephen F. Austin State University.

Dr. Heather Olson Beal, SFA associate professor in the Department of Secondary Education and Educational Leadership, serves as the coordinator for this free weeklong program.

Poetry book published by SFA Press named finalist for High Plains Book Award


NACOGDOCHES, Texas — A poetry book written by prolific poet Greg Kuzma and published by SFA Press, has been named a finalist for the 2018 High Plains Book Award for Poetry.

“Hose and Iron: Selected Poems” was published in 2017 through SFA Press, a publishing entity that operates through Stephen F. Austin State University. Kuzma, who has published more than 1,500 poems during a 50-year timespan, lives in Nebraska, but chose SFA Press to publish his latest collection of poems.

SFA’s SummerStage Festival to open June 29


NACOGDOCHES, Texas – In less than a week, the SummerStage Festival at Stephen F. Austin State University will open for its three-week run of presenting a fun and heartwarming children’s musical and an emotionally powerful American play for the 2018 summer theatre season.

2016-17 SFA Stone Fort yearbook nationally recognized


NACOGDOCHES, Texas — While its purpose may be to preserve history, Stephen F. Austin State University’s 2016-17 Stone Fort yearbook has made history by being honored with a national award.

Balfour Yearbooks, the premier national provider of school spirit and recognition productions, acknowledged SFA’s 2016-17 Stone Fort yearbook staff members for their outstanding contribution to scholastic journalism, making them one of only 4 percent of yearbook staffs nationwide to receive this recognition.

Art scholarship fundraiser: 12x12 silent bidding starts soon


NACOGDOCHES, Texas – Silent bidding for artwork in the annual 12x12 scholarship fundraiser for the Friends of the Visual Arts at Stephen F. Austin State University gets underway Thursday, June 28, at The Cole Art Center @ The Old Opera House in downtown Nacogdoches.

The silent auction features 12-by-12-inch pieces of art created by approximately 70 artists from Nacogdoches, Lufkin and other areas of East Texas. Anyone may silently bid on the unique one-of-a-kind pieces, according to Crystal Hicks, event committee chairwoman.

SFA art students experience residency in Iceland


NACOGDOCHES, Texas – Stephen F. Austin State University art students recently experienced the many opportunities that an artist residency can offer when they participated in a Maymester trip to Iceland.

SFA Campus Recreation to host annual scholarship bass fishing tournament


NACOGDOCHES, Texas — Stephen F. Austin State University’s Campus Recreation Department will host the sixth annual Worsham Bass Tournament Saturday, June 30, at Jackson Hill Park and Marina on Lake Sam Rayburn in Broaddus.

All proceeds will benefit the Dr. Raymond Lee Worsham Scholarship, which provides financial assistance to Campus Recreation student workers.

Worsham served as the intramural department director at SFA for 43 years. The scholarship was created to honor Worsham’s dedication to SFA and recognize his lasting impact.

Destination: Business - SFA students learn economics, manufacturing, trade while studying abroad


NACOGDOCHES, Texas — Living out of a suitcase may seem like a dream for wanderers at heart. For 24 Stephen F. Austin State University business students this idea became a reality as they traveled for 12 days to three countries, staying in seven hotels and making countless memories.

Recently, students in the Rusche College of Business studied abroad in Iceland, Scotland and Ireland to better understand the history of economics, manufacturing and trade in international companies.

Governor appoints Childress SFA student regent


NACOGDOCHES, Texas — Kate Childress, a Stephen F. Austin State University graduate student from Lumberton, enjoys serving others, and in her new role as student regent, she will have the opportunity to impact the campus community in myriad ways.

Gov. Greg Abbott appointed Childress to serve in this position, and her term as student regent began in June 2018 and will end in May 2019. She graduated from SFA in May 2017 with a Bachelor of Science in psychology and has continued her SFA education, now working toward a master’s degree in student affairs.

SFA STEM Center accepting registration for iMAS Academy


NACOGDOCHES, Texas — The Stephen F. Austin State University STEM Research and Learning Center is accepting registration for a weeklong STEM camp for students entering sixth through eighth grade.

During Investigations in Math and Science Academy, or iMAS Academy, students spend the week participating in engaging, hands-on activities designed to help them develop a variety of skills while highlighting the diverse careers available in STEM disciplines.
