Students develop research skills through SFA College of Sciences and Mathematics’ undergraduate research program


NACOGDOCHES, Texas — Gathered around tables in a classroom of the Math Building, students and faculty from departments across the College of Sciences and Mathematics discussed the research – ranging from characterizing anticancer agents to investigating geologic structures – they have spent weeks conducting as part of the Summer Undergraduate Research Experience.

The results of this research will be showcased in a poster session open to the public at 2 p.m. Friday in the Math Building, Room 123.

SFA College of Fine Arts announces 2018-19 University Series


NACOGDOCHES, Texas — The College of Fine Arts at Stephen F. Austin State University will present five exciting national touring acts in the highly diverse 2018-19 University Series. It offers something for everyone: comedy, a string quintet, bluegrass, African-American dance and contemporary Mexican music.

Additionally, two Encore Events will provide even more varied musical programming with a true jazz legend and a rock legend reincarnated in the world’s most authentic tribute to the late, great Prince. Ticketing for Encore Events is separate from the University Series.

SFA offers online Master of Arts in Teaching


NACOGDOCHES, Texas — Educators who want to complete their master’s degree in teaching without having to relocate or travel can do so through an online program offered at Stephen F. Austin State University.

SFA’s James I. Perkins College of Education is now offering a revised 30-hour online Master of Arts in Teaching that allows educators who have completed an early childhood through 12th grade teaching certification the opportunity to finish their graduate degree.

Dr. Mary Nelle Brunson to offer SFA summer commencement address


NACOGDOCHES, Texas — Dr. Mary Nelle Brunson, Stephen F. Austin State University associate provost and associate vice president for academic affairs, will offer the commencement address during the university’s summer graduation ceremony Saturday, Aug. 11.

An SFA graduate holding a Bachelor of Arts and a Master of Education, Brunson received her doctoral degree in early childhood education from the University of North Texas. She holds Texas teacher certification for grades pre-kindergarten through eighth and mid-management administrator certification.

SFA to offer online Master of Education in teaching and learning


NACOGDOCHES, Texas — Teaching professionals seeking to continue their education need look no further than Stephen F. Austin State University. In January 2019, SFA will offer a Master of Education in teaching and learning completely online to allow educators the opportunity to pursue a graduate degree without relocating.

This degree targets early childhood through 12th grade teachers who wish to develop their skills and knowledge in these three teaching specializations: online, English as a Second Language/bilingual, and gifted and talented.

SFA Gardens’ Theresa and Les Reeves Lecture Series to feature horticulture associate professor from Alabama


NACOGDOCHES, Texas — Stephen F. Austin State University’s SFA Gardens will host the monthly Theresa and Les Reeves Lecture Series at 7 p.m. Aug. 9 in the Brundrett Conservation Education Building at the Pineywoods Native Plant Center, located at 2900 Raguet St.

Dr. Jay Spiers, an associate professor of horticulture from Auburn University, will present, “Alternative Fruit Crops for a Changing Gulf South: What’s on the Horizon?”

SFA’s Music Preparatory Division offers scholarships


NACOGDOCHES, Texas — The Music Preparatory Division of the Stephen F. Austin State University School of Music is accepting scholarship applications for its fall classes.

The music program features the study of a variety of musical instruments and choral techniques. Upper-level musicians as well as SFA faculty and students teach private lessons and classes. Registration for fall programs also is underway.

SFA to screen ‘Beltracchi: The Art of Forgery’ documentary


NACOGDOCHES, Texas — The Stephen F. Austin State University School of Art and the Friends of the Visual Arts will present a free, one-night screening of  “Beltracchi: The Art of Forgery” at 7 p.m. Friday, Aug. 3, in The Cole Art Center @ The Old Opera House in downtown Nacogdoches.

The documentary is described at imdb.com as “a mesmerizing, thought-provoking yet surprisingly amusing documentary on the life and times of Wolfgang Beltracchi, who tricked the international art world for nearly 40 years by forging and selling paintings of early 20th-century masters.”

SFA School of Social Work receives grant from Hogg Foundation for Mental Health


NACOGDOCHES, Texas — Stephen F. Austin State University’s School of Social Work is one of five Texas entities receiving a $410,000 grant from the Hogg Foundation for Mental Health to support collaborative approaches to well-being in rural communities.

The grant funds an initiative focusing on identifying and improving the mental health conditions of Nacogdoches County. More than 60 rural counties from around Texas applied for the grant. Other counties receiving the grant are Bastrop, Brooks, Morris and Victoria.

SFA students excavate historic Nacogdoches farmstead


NACOGDOCHES, Texas — Anthropology students at Stephen F. Austin State University had the opportunity to get an up-close and personal look at “Texas’ Oldest Town” as they spent this summer excavating one of Nacogdoches’ historic areas.

Students who participated in SFA's field school with Dr. Leslie Cecil, chair and professor of the Department of Anthropology, Geography and Sociology, spent five weeks excavating the historic Millard barn. This is the first time the farmstead was excavated.
