Fort Worth artist Nowlin to exhibit in Griffith Gallery


NACOGDOCHES, Texas – The Stephen F. Austin State University College of Fine Arts and School of Art will open the exhibition “Devon Nowlin: Don’t Deny Your Heart” with a reception from 5 to 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 20, in Griffith Gallery on the SFA campus.

The show, which runs Oct. 20 through Dec. 9, features paintings and altered digital prints. Nowlin’s work reflects a personal and market-driven desire to, in her own words, “curate environments and personas that aspire for a lifestyle of casual luxury,” according to John Handley, director of galleries at SFA.

Tickets still available for Big Heads Blues Club


NACOGDOCHES, Texas – Tickets are still available for the Big Head Blues Club performance at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 13, in W.M. Turner Auditorium on the Stephen F. Austin State University campus.

The Big Head Blues Club, featuring Big Head Todd and the Monsters with Mud Morganfield, Billy Branch, Ronnie Baker Brooks and Erica Brown, will present “Way Down Inside: Songs of Willie Dixon,” a performance that pays tribute to one of the pillars of modern blues. The show, which is part of the SFA College of Fine Arts’ University Series, is sponsored in part by Lehmann Eye Center.

SFA Gardens host container gardening seminar


NACOGDOCHES, Texas — Stephen F. Austin State University’s SFA Gardens will host a hands-on container gardening seminar featuring Sharon Lee Smith from 9 a.m. to noon Nov. 5 at the Brundrett Conservation Education Building at the SFA Pineywoods Native Plant Center, 2900 Raguet St.

Smith will help home gardeners learn the “hows” and “whys” of container gardening, as cheerful container gardens provide beauty and color during the winter. Participants will then put their knowledge to use by creating their own exquisite container garden to take home.

SFA’s Children’s Performing Arts Series presents ‘Pollyanna’


NACOGDOCHES, Texas – The Children’s Performing Arts Series at Stephen F. Austin State University will open its 2016-17 season with two performances of the beloved children’s classic “Pollyanna” on Thursday, Oct. 27, in W.M. Turner Auditorium on the SFA campus.

Presented by Stars Within Reach Productions, “Pollyanna” is based on the best-selling classic by Eleanor H. Porter.

SFA alumnus Bob Slovak to serve as interviewer for Nelson Rusche Distinguished Lecture Series


NACOGDOCHES, Texas — Stephen F. Austin State University alumnus Bob Slovak, sports anchor and reporter for KTRK-TV in Houston, will serve as interviewer for the inaugural Nelson Rusche Distinguished Lecture Series featuring former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush as the guest speaker at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 3, in the Baker Pattillo Student Center Grand Ballroom.  

SFA visual merchandising students design display cases, feature Nacogdoches retailers


NACOGDOCHES, Texas — Display cases lining the halls of the Education Annex Building on the Stephen F. Austin State University campus have been transformed into product displays with patterned fabrics, unique lighting and various products offered at local businesses.

The product display cases were created by SFA students enrolled in a visual merchandising course that allowed them to use the skills they’ve learned in the classroom to gain real-world experience.

WoodWired Duo to perform at SFA


NACOGDOCHES, Texas – The Stephen F. Austin State University School of Music and the Cole Performing Arts Series will present the WoodWired Duo performing in a guest recital at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 26, in the Music Recital Hall in the Wright Music Building on the SFA campus.

WoodWired is a new electroacoustic duo based in Denton. The duo features Dr. Cheyenne Cruz, clarinet, and Hannah Leffler, flute, teaming up to create a unique take on the popular clarinet/flute combination, according to Dr. Christopher Ayer, professor of clarinet at SFA.

Governor appoints Bramhall as new SFA student regent


NACOGDOCHES, Texas — Ireland Bramhall of Ennis has been appointed by Gov. Greg Abbott to serve as student regent for Stephen F. Austin State University during the 2020-21 academic year.

“I love SFA, so to be able to have an impact on the university at a deeper level is something that I’ve wanted since I stepped foot here my first day of freshman year,” said Bramhall, a hospitality administration senior.

The SFA Board of Regents comprises 10 members appointed by the governor, including a non-voting student regent.
