From streams to rivers, coral reefs to oceans, the aquatic biology concentration at SFA offers courses in both freshwater and marine biology for a robust education in the behavior, biology, ecosystems and ecology of aquatic species. Our research-focused curriculum gives students valuable career-building opportunities under the direction of SFA’s biology faculty members, who are groundbreaking scientists in their fields.

Aquatic biologists learn the skills necessary to understand and manage both freshwater and marine ecosystems, the species that live within them, and the environments at the intersection between aquatic and terrestrial habitats. Both freshwater and marine biologists work in zoological settings, for monitoring organizations like the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration/National Marine Fisheries Service/US Fish and Wildlife Service, and with nongovernmental organizations.

Our students can intern with state partner institutions, like the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department and Texas river authorities, which allow them to experience the day-to-day work of fishery science and conservation.

Research opportunities include wild studies in Galveston Bay, along with hands-on marine mammal science in picturesque locations, including Bermuda, Big Island Hawaii and Oahu, with leading conservation partners like Dolphin Quest, as well as research in Atlanta at the world-famous Georgia Aquarium.
