Disability Services offers students with temporary disabling conditions help in locating services and assistance vital to their continued academic success. Examples of temporary conditions may include, but are not limited to, broken bones, sprained joints, minor surgeries, and pregnancy complications. The office works with the student to determine individual needs and then attempts to package assistance from available resources on campus. While there is not always an answer for every situation, much of the time, there are successful ways of addressing students’ temporary needs. The success of this program comes from the cooperation of SFA’s student-centered faculty and staff.
Documentation Requirements
To receive accommodations for a temporary condition, the student may complete our application for services and include a summary indicating the type of disability, impact, and estimated duration of the disability. It is also helpful to know any side effects caused by medication and recommendations for accommodations. The information should be recent enough to identify current impact. Additional information may be requested to update Disability Services on continued need for accommodations. Disability Services staff will advise the student if any additional information is needed prior to setting up accommodations, as well as share information on potential resources.
Potential Accommodations for Temporary Disabilities
Academic accommodations are identified through an interactive process. Examples of accommodations which may be available for a temporary injury may include:
- Scribe for exams
- Notetaking assistance
- Audio recorder for lectures
- Extended testing time
- Computer for essay exams
- Classroom and testing accommodations
- Accessible routes and elevator access on campus
- Extended travel time across campus between classes
- How to apply for a county-issued disabled parking placard or paratransit services
Each student is assessed individually and every endeavor is made to work with instructors to find workable answers appropriate to the particular course.
