Who We Are

SFA’s STEM Research and Learning Center serves the university and the region by raising interest and awareness in science, technology, engineering and mathematics education.

The center partners with K-12 schools to provide services such as year-round outreach events, summer camps and SFA STEM Academies. We offer innovative curriculum based on real-world problems and current events delivered via creative activities and project-based learning modules. Our mission is to educate, train, and inspire the next generation of students, teachers and the community to thrive in a world increasingly advanced by innovation in STEM.

The STEM Research and Learning Center continues to push toward a culture of innovation and problem solving. Since 2011, the center has served more than 10,000 students and teachers in the deep East Texas region and beyond. With generous funding support from the National Science Foundation, the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board and the Texas Workforce Commission, the center has been able to offer a variety of programs for K-12 students and teachers. In collaboration with JacksTeach, the center facilitates professional development and workshops for K-12 educators.  Programs include degree-seeking opportunities; professional development and continuing education for teachers; and summer STEM experiences for students.

Through our STEM Academies, high school students participate in a rigorous STEM program involving real-world curriculum, laboratory and field experiences vital to students’ college and career success. Community events, such as family fun nights and Saturday STEM explorations, will spark learning and creativity in young minds and support families as they cultivate curiosities in their children. Through these and other types of events, the center offers opportunities for service and volunteerism for SFA faculty and students to share their love of science and mathematics, to engage in STEM research, and to make cross-disciplinary connections.
