Get out of the classroom and into the field

As a cadet in ROTC, you’ll build the valuable leadership skills you need for a successful future in nearly any industry. You’ll learn discipline and time management skills. You’ll challenge yourself, physically and mentally.

And as a cadet in SFA’s ROTC, you’ll have access to unique facilities and field training opportunities that will let you put your newly developed skills to good use. Test your limits on the newly constructed obstacle course. Learn land navigation in the East Texas Piney Woods. Train with members of local law enforcement.

1st Lt. Kile G. West Memorial Obstacle Course

Completed in April 2018 and dedicated in memory of 1st Lt. Kile G. West, an SFA graduate killed in action May 28, 2007 in Abu Sayda, Iraq, the obstacle training course was custom designed to help cadets develop the strength, stamina and confidence they need to complete challenging schools. The obstacle course is located next to the Student Recreation Center.

The Stephen F. Austin Experimental Forest

Spend a weekend deep in the East Texas Piney Woods, armed with only a set of coordinates. Find a cache of weapons, carry out orders and complete your mission. Learn the basics of land navigation and tactical operations. The 2,560-acre Stephen F. Austin Experimental Forest is located about 20 minutes from campus, and it offers ROTC cadets the opportunity to put their leadership skills to use out in the field.

Nacogdoches Emergency Operational Center
