SFA Gardens’ October lecture features vegetable specialist


NACOGDOCHES, Texas — Stephen F. Austin State University's SFA Gardens will host the monthly Theresa and Les Reeves Lecture Series at 7 p.m. Oct. 13 in the Brundrett Conservation Education Building at the Pineywoods Native Plant Center. 

Dr. Kathryn "Kiki" Fontenot, an associate professor and vegetable extension specialist at the Louisiana State University AgCenter, will present "Containing Edibles to Maximize Your Garden's Beauty and Yields."

SFA’s University Police Department to host National Night Out


NACOGDOCHES, Texas –– Stephen F. Austin State University’s Police Department will host a National Night Out celebration from 5 to 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 4, at the turnaround in Parking Lot 3, located in front of the Lehmann Chemistry Building and Kennedy Auditorium on SFA’s campus. 

SFA School of Art to present ‘Paper Alchemy’ exhibition


NACOGDOCHES, Texas – The School of Art at Stephen F. Austin State University will present the exhibition “Paper Alchemy,” curated by James Thurman, Oct. 7 through Nov. 9,in Reavley Gallery in The Cole Art Center @ The Old Opera House.

SFA student receives Tony Houseman Conservation Legacy Award


NACOGDOCHES, Texas — Amber Borel, a sophomore forestry major at Stephen F. Austin State University, was awarded the 2022 Tony Houseman Conservation Legacy Award, recognizing her service to others and dedication to advancing the field of conservation.

The annual award, presented by Higher Calling Wildlife, a conservation-based publication, celebrates the legacy of Tony Houseman, an East Texas businessman known for his philanthropy and wildlife conservation advocacy.  

SFA theatre students to present Ruhl’s ‘Eurydice’ one-act play


NACOGDOCHES, Texas – The Stephen F. Austin State University School of Theatre and Dance will present the student-directed one-act play “Eurydice” by Sarah Ruhl at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 7, and at 2 and 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 8, in Regents Suite A in the Baker Pattillo Student Center on the SFA campus.

Dramaturg, fight, intimacy directors have crucial roles in bringing ‘The Moors’ to life


NACOGDOCHES, Texas – Beyond delivering lines in a play that are confident and convincing, an actor has to understand the intentions of their character and behave persuasively on stage, and costume and scenic designs have to be authentic to lend true credibility to a performance.

SFA Chamber Singers to present ‘Lighten My Darkness’


NACOGDOCHES, Texas – The Chamber Singers at Stephen F. Austin State University will perform choral music with themes of light, darkness and hope. The “Lighten My Darkness” concert will feature works by Jeffrey Van, Alice Parker, Tomas de Victoria, Josu Elberdin, Moses Hogan, Troy Robertson, Reginald Unterseher and Zachary Moore.

The students perform at 4 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 9, in Cole Concert Hall on the SFA campus. Dr. Michael Murphy, director of choral activities at SFA, conducts the Chamber Singers.

NACOGDOCHES, Texas – Planning is underway for the 12 X 12 Scholarship Fundraiser hosted by the Friends of the Visual Arts at Stephen F. Austin State University and benefiting students in the SFA School of Art, and event sponsorship opportunities are still available.

SFA’s Rusche College of Business names Dr. Marcus Cox coordinator of Business and Community Services


NACOGDOCHES, Texas — Dr. Marcus Cox, associate professor of management in Stephen F. Austin State University’s Rusche College of Business, has been named coordinator for Business and Community Services, a new entity launched by the college to assist local and regional businesses, nonprofits and government entities with business-related activities.

SFA reports fall 2022 enrollment numbers


NACOGDOCHES, Texas — More students are graduating sooner, and more first-year students are persisting in their studies, according to Stephen F. Austin State University’s fall 2022 enrollment numbers and success reports.

Even with a decrease in overall enrollment, the university saw growth among several populations and achieved its highest six-year graduation rate in the university’s history.
