SFA Board of Regents approves renewal of marketing campaign


The Stephen F. Austin State University Board of Regents heard a report from the agency in charge of the university's marketing campaign and approved an extension of the campaign for the next fiscal year.

During the board's annual spring meeting, the Richards/Carlberg agency reported that a variety of metrics show the campaign is having the desired effect - attendance at Showcase Saturday events has increased, applications are up 8 percent as compared to this time last year, and both admitted students and housing applications are up 14 percent.

SFA Fashion Gallery to hold grand opening


NACOGDOCHES, Texas - The Stephen F. Austin State University School of Human Sciences fashion merchandising program invites university alumni and friends to Fashion Icons: A Legacy of Style Fashion Gallery Opening and Costume Exhibition at 5:30 p.m. Thursday, April 30, in the Education Annex, 1620 Raguet St. in Nacogdoches.

Featured speaker will be Houston fashion industry insider, Roz Pactor, who will speak at 6 p.m. in the Culinary Café followed by a ribbon cutting to officially open the Fashion Gallery and viewing of the new exhibition.

Heifner to conduct beginner workshop in playwriting


NACOGDOCHES, Texas -The Beta Phi cast of Alpha Psi Omega national theatre honors society at Stephen F. Austin State University will host a playwriting workshop with SFA's playwright-in-residence, Jack Heifner.

The workshop is scheduled for 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday, April 26, in Room 303 of the Griffith Fine Arts Building on the SFA campus. Cost is $25 for community members and $10 for students attending any college or university.

SFA School of Theatre to present 'August: Osage County': Production to feature stage veterans Simmons, Maule


NACOGDOCHES, Texas - When the Stephen F. Austin State University College of Fine Arts and School of Theatre present "August: Osage County," some familiar professional actors will be seen on stage appearing alongside SFA's talented student performers.

Preserving the Past


From the outside, the casual observer might not notice anything unusual about the small office tucked away among the regular business operations on the first floor of the Rusk Building on the SFA campus, but a glance inside reveals the roots of an organization stretching back more than a century.

Amid countless books and artifacts ranging from antique toys and rusty pieces of history to vintage furniture and a cardboard cutout of John Wayne is the home of an organization with beginnings in the campfires and cowboys of Texas lore.

SFA's University and Symphonic bands to perform concert


NACOGDOCHES, Texas - The Stephen F. Austin State University Symphonic Band and University Band present their last concert of the semester at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 21, in Cole Concert Hall.

A presentation of the SFA College of Fine Arts and School of Music, "Classics to Modern" features music ranging from Baroque to contemporary, according to Dr. David Campo, associate director of bands at SFA.

SFA's Trombone Choir to present varied program


NACOGDOCHES, Texas - The Stephen F. Austin State University College of Fine Arts and School of Music will present a concert of the Trombone Choir at 7:30 p.m. Monday, April 20, in Cole Concert Hall in the Wright Music Building on the SFA campus.

The choir will perform a varied concert of traditional trombone choir pieces, according to Dr. Deb Scott, professor of trombone at SFA and the choir's director.

SFA Friends of Music to present Extravaganza 28


NACOGDOCHES, Texas - The SFA Friends of Music will accept reservations through noon Friday, April 17, for Extravaganza 28, Stephen F. Austin State University School of Music's annual gala banquet. The event is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. Thursday, April 23, in the Grand Ballroom of SFA's Baker Pattillo Student Center.

Education through theatre becomes Fredonia Players' new focus


NACOGDOCHES, Texas - The Fredonia Players, Stephen F. Austin State University School of Theatre's outreach performance troupe, has changed its mission and is focused on education through theatre, according to Melissa McMillian-Cunningham, theatre teacher certification program coordinator at SFA.

SFA partners with GETCAP to celebrate National Week of the Young Child


NACOGDOCHES, Texas - The Stephen F. Austin State University Early Childhood Lab, in partnership with the Greater East Texas Community Action Program Head Start Program, invites the community to participate in the Week of the Young Child, which will be observed Monday, April 13, through Friday, April 17, in Nacogdoches County.

As part of the National Week of the Young Child celebrated across the U.S., Nacogdoches is honoring young children and all those who make a difference in children's lives.
