SFA School of Music to present ‘Holiday Celebration Concert’


NACOGDOCHES, Texas – The School of Music at Stephen F. Austin State University will present an evening of festive music featuring various student ensembles in a Holiday Celebration Concert at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 2, in W.M. Turner Auditorium, Griffith Fine Arts Building, on the SFA campus.

The fundraising concert ushers in the holiday season while benefiting students in the School of Music, according to Dr. J.D. Salas, professor in the School of Music and concert organizer.

SFA to screen Lansdale’s ‘Bubba Ho-Tep’ film


NACOGDOCHES, Texas – The Stephen F. Austin State University School of Art and the Friends of the Visual Arts will present a free, one-night screening of “Bubba Ho-Tep,” based on the novella by Nacogdoches author Joe R. Lansdale and adapted to film by Don Coscarelli, at 7 p.m. Friday, Dec. 1, at The Cole Art Center @ The Old Opera House.

SFA Jacks of Steel to present ‘From Dawn to Dusk’ program


NACOGDOCHES, Texas – The steel drum band at Stephen F. Austin State University, also known as Jacks of Steel, will present the program “From Dawn to Dusk” at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 29, in Cole Concert Hall on the SFA campus.

Each piece in “From Dawn to Dusk” represents “the flow of time throughout the day, starting in the morning and ending late in nighttime,” according to Dr. Jamie Vilseck, adjunct instructor of percussion and director of the Jacks of Steel.

Bassoon professor Hunter to present concert at SFA


NACOGDOCHES, Texas – Dr. Cody Hunter, assistant professor in the Stephen F. Austin State University School of Music, will present a faculty concert, “Omnium Gatherum: Music for Bassoon,” at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 28, in the Music Recital Hall, Wright Music Building, on the SFA campus.

The program title means “miscellaneous gathering,” referring to the eclectic selection of bassoon works to be performed, according to Hunter.

Raychev places second in TMEA statewide audition


NACOGDOCHES, Texas – Jonah Raychev, ninth-grade student at Central Heights ISD and a violin student in the Music Preparatory Division of the Stephen F. Austin State University School of Music, placed second in Texas at the Texas Music Educators Association All State Orchestra audition.
 

SFA art students to host ‘Jacks of All Trades’ pop-up exhibition


NACOGDOCHES, Texas – Advanced and graduate sculpture installation students at Stephen F. Austin State University, along with their professor, Eden Collins, will host “Jacks of All Trades,” a pop-up exhibition, from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday, Dec. 8, at Turner Fabrication, 718 S. University Drive, Nacogdoches.
 

Dr. David Creech to be SFA Gardens December lecture series speaker


NACOGDOCHES, Texas — Stephen F. Austin State University’s SFA Gardens will host the monthly Theresa and Les Reeves Lecture Series at 7 p.m. Dec. 14 in the Brundrett Conservation Education Building at the Pineywoods Native Plant Center.

Dr. David Creech, director of SFA Gardens, will present “Is the Pineywoods Native Plant Center a Case Study of Divine Intervention … or Maybe Not? Capitalizing on the Best Plants, Plans and People to Create a Green Resource for the Gulf South.”

NACOGDOCHES, Texas — Incoming first-year college students who want to pursue a Bachelor of Science in Nursing will now find the admission process easier at Stephen F. Austin State University with the Lumberjack Nursing Guarantee.

SFA first-generation students awarded $5K scholarships from Coca-Cola


NACOGDOCHES, Texas — Six first-generation students at Stephen F. Austin State University received $5,000 scholarships from Coca-Cola Southwest Beverages to help with their financial needs so they can continue their studies at the university.

SFA’s Cooking Matters program holds eighth season in new location


NACOGDOCHES, Texas — The Stephen F. Austin State University School of Human Sciences’ six-week community nutrition program, Cooking Matters, completed its eighth year at a Nacogdoches food pantry’s new resource center earlier this month.

Partnering with the East Texas Food Bank and Nacogdoches HOPE Food Pantry, students in SFA’s community nutrition course provided nutrition education and basic cooking lessons to participants in the community from Oct. 2 through Nov. 6.
