Outstanding faculty members to be honored at 31st SFA Gala


NACOGDOCHES, Texas — Chosen for their excellence in teaching and innovation in research, two Stephen F. Austin State University faculty members will be honored Saturday, Dec. 14, during the 31st annual SFA Gala.

SFA to present annual Holiday Celebration


NACOGDOCHES, Texas – Stephen F. Austin State University School of Music will present its annual SFA Holiday Celebration at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Dec. 6, in W.M. Turner Auditorium on the SFA campus.

A highlight of the program will be a performance of “Christmas Cantata,” or “Sinfonia Sacra,” by Daniel Pinkham. The concert will also feature works by Dominick Argento, Felix Mendelssohn, George Frideric Handel, Eric Edward Whitacre and Giuseppe Verdi, along with seasonal favorites.

Preservice teachers build connections, develop co-teaching experience outside the classroom with Wild About Science


NACOGDOCHES, Texas – Around 100 Stephen F. Austin State University preservice teachers helped 900 local fourth graders investigate ecosystems, soil particles and tree functions at the second-annual Wild About Science learning excursion Nov. 5 through 7 at SFA’s Pineywoods Native Plant Center.

The preservice teachers, who are earning degrees through both online completer and face-to-face, campus-based SFA education programs, worked together to show fourth graders how to connect the science they’ve learned in the classroom to real-life situations at the native plant center.

Dr. David Creech receives lifetime achievement award from Native Plant Society of Texas


NACOGDOCHES, Texas — Dr. David Creech, Stephen F. Austin State University professor emeritus of agriculture and director of SFA Gardens, received the Charles Leonard Weddle Award for lifetime achievement in the field of Texas native plants from the Native Plant Society of Texas during its 2019 banquet in League City.

‘The Music of Silence’ featured in SFA’s Friday Night Film Series


NACOGDOCHES, Texas – The Stephen F. Austin State University School of Art and the Friends of the Visual Arts will present a free, one-night screening of the documentary “The Music of Silence” at 7 p.m. Friday, Dec. 6, in The Cole Art Center @ The Old Opera House in downtown Nacogdoches.

SFA’s Stone Fort Museum announces 2019 Cum Concilio Club Heritage Preservation Award recipients


NACOGDOCHES, Texas — Stephen F. Austin State University’s Stone Fort Museum has named the late Dr. James E. Corbin and Dr. Tom Middlebrook as the 2019 Cum Concilio Club Heritage Preservation Award recipients.

SFA Symphony Orchestra to perform works by Schumann, von Weber, Grondahl


NACOGDOCHES, Texas – The SFA Symphony Orchestra will perform works of German Romantic composers in a concert at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 3, in Cole Concert Hall on the campus of Stephen F. Austin State University.

The headlining piece on the program is Symphony No. 4 by Robert Schumann.

Cole Art Center to host annual Vintage Christmas Display


NACOGDOCHES, Texas – The annual Vintage Christmas Display opens Tuesday, Dec.3, at The Cole Art Center @ The Old Opera House.

This display has become a holiday tradition for Stephen F. Austin State University’s historic downtown art gallery, according to John Handley, director of SFA galleries.

“Featuring antique and vintage holiday ornaments, dolls and toys, this display offers a glimpse into Christmas past and provides a perfect treat for the family during the holidays,” Handley said.

SFA to present two touring versions of Dickens’ ‘A Christmas Carol’


NACOGDOCHES, Texas – Ring in the holiday season with Stephen F. Austin State University as the College of Fine Arts presents not one but two stage versions of Charles Dickens’ “A Christmas Carol.” The first event is a musical extravaganza for the entire family, and the second is especially geared toward sharing the holiday classic with younger audiences.

SFA Gardens to host wreath-making seminar


NACOGDOCHES, Texas — Stephen F. Austin State University’s SFA Gardens will host a garden seminar, “Deck the Halls: Using Evergreens to Decorate for the Holidays,” from 9 a.m. to noon Dec. 7 at the Brundrett Conservation Education Building at the SFA Pineywoods Native Plant Center, located at 2900 Raguet St.

Evergreen branches and garlands once served as symbols of enduring life and a fruitful year to come. Dawn Stover, SFA Gardens research associate, will teach participants how to create elegant wreaths and garlands using these and other materials from the garden.
