SFA to host Showcase Saturday for prospective students


NACOGDOCHES, Texas — Future college students will have the opportunity to experience a taste of campus life during a free, action-packed open house Saturday, Nov. 10, at Stephen F. Austin State University in Nacogdoches.

Prospective students can visit with university faculty and staff, tour the campus and residence halls, and preview academic programs during the SFA Showcase Saturday event.

SFA Photo Club to host juried student exhibition


NACOGDOCHES, Texas – The Stephen F. Austin State University Photo Club will host its first juried show of student work, the Pineywoods Photography Exhibition, Nov. 14 through Dec. 12 in Griffith Gallery on the SFA campus.

Juror Priya Kambli selected work for the exhibit from more than 75 submissions sent in by students from across the SFA campus. Three awards will be announced during the opening reception, which is scheduled for 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 14, in the gallery.

Wind Symphony, Symphonic Band concert celebrates Christmas traditions


NACOGDOCHES, Texas – The Wind Symphony and the Symphonic Band at Stephen F. Austin State University will celebrate Christmas traditions from both at home and abroad when the bands perform at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 14, in W.M. Turner Auditorium on the SFA campus.

SFA Gardens’ Theresa and Les Reeves Lecture Series to feature Director Dr. David Creech


NACOGDOCHES, Texas — Stephen F. Austin State University’s SFA Gardens will host the monthly Theresa and Les Reeves Lecture Series at 7 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 8, in the Brundrett Conservation Education Building at the Pineywoods Native Plant Center, located at 2900 Raguet St.

Dr. David Creech, SFA Gardens director and professor emeritus of agriculture, will present, “SFA Gardens: Where Good Ideas Meet Insurmountable Obstacles.”

Two areas on SFA campus named in honor of alumni


NACOGDOCHES, Texas — Two areas on the Stephen F. Austin State University campus were named in honor of alumni during the recent Board of Regents meeting.

The university’s new ROTC obstacle course was named in honor of alumnus 1st Lt. Kile G. West, who graduated from SFA in 2005. West attended the field artillery officer basic course and was assigned to the 1st Calvary Division at Fort Hood, Texas.

SFA nursing students conduct disaster simulation drill


NACOGDOCHES, Texas -— Senior nursing students from Stephen F. Austin State University’s DeWitt School of Nursing treated “patients” and assessed injuries during a recent disaster simulation drill designed to help the students develop disaster preparedness.

The drills are conducted by fourth semester nursing students each fall and spring semester to teach them how to better react in an uncontrolled environment.

A heart for service: SFA Lumberjack leads on and off the field


NACOGDOCHES, Texas -— Brett Payne hasn't always had a beard, but now that he's the newest face of the Lumberjack mascot, it's just another part of the job.

“I was really skeptical about coming into it, but the spirit team took me in with open arms and with no beard at all,” said Payne, senior marketing major of Houston.
