SFA horticulture professor featured in The New York Times
NACOGDOCHES, Texas — Dr. Jared Barnes, associate professor of horticulture at Stephen F. Austin State University, was featured in a New York Times article that allows him to share his gardening expertise and the resources he uses as an educator.
From Barnes’ experiences gardening as a boy to his current position as a faculty member in the Arthur Temple College of Forestry and Agriculture, the article addresses Barnes’ passion for teaching through his newsletter, “plant-ed,” and the insights he gains from other horticulturalists’ newsletters.
Children’s series at SFA to present ‘Click, Clack, Moo: Cows That Type’
NACOGDOCHES, Texas – The Children’s Performing Arts Series at Stephen F. Austin State University will present two performances of “Click, Clack, Moo: Cows That Type” Wednesday, May 8, in W.M. Turner Auditorium on the SFA campus.
The children’s play presented by Main Street Theater of Houston is based on the book by Doreen Cronin and Betsy Lewin, used with permission of Pippin Properties, Inc., and adapted by James E. Grote and George Howe.
Saturday Morning Art Program provides valuable learning opportunity for SFA’s senior art education students
NACOGDOCHES, Texas – Stephen F. Austin State University School of Art welcomed 25 elementary and middle school students this spring to participate in the Saturday Morning Art Program.
Dr. Dan Li, visiting assistant professor of art education, coordinated the program as part of the service-learning component in her art education course.
SFA student journalists earn statewide recognition
NACOGDOCHES, Texas — Stephen F. Austin State University student journalists received 23 awards from the Texas Intercollegiate Press Association for their performance at a statewide journalism competition and for their contributions to the student newspaper and yearbook during 2023.
The Pine Log student newspaper earned nine awards for previously published work, and the Stone Fort yearbook also won nine awards, including an Overall Excellence trophy, for the centennial volume titled “A Century of Tradition.”
SFA’s STEM Research and Learning Center renamed, new services offered
NACOGDOCHES, Texas — To better reflect its mission and scope, Stephen F. Austin State University’s STEM Research and Learning Center has been renamed the STEM Education and Research Center. This name change marks an exciting new chapter in the center's commitment to serving the educational needs of local school districts in deep East Texas.
UT System executive vice chancellor to address May SFA graduates
NACOGDOCHES, Texas — Dr. Archie Holmes, the executive vice chancellor for academic affairs at The University of Texas System, will give the commencement addresses during Stephen F. Austin State University’s four graduation ceremonies May 10-11.
Holmes provides oversight and guidance for the nine UT System academic institutions, which enroll more than 228,000 students, produce nearly 60,000 graduates a year, and have an aggregate annual operating budget of more than $7.7 billion.
SFA Gardens to host Botany Bliss educational workshop for families
NACOGDOCHES, Texas — Kay Jenkins, SFA Gardens environmental education programs coordinator, is hosting a Saturday Science Adventure beginning at 9 a.m. May 11 at the Pineywoods Native Plant Center.
Attendees will learn how botanists identify plants using characteristics such as overall size, leaf shape, flower parts and more. Participants will be encouraged to use their observation skills and build their appreciation for the biodiversity and beauty of the natural world around them as they participate in a guided tour of the gardens.
SFA’s Contemporary Ensemble to stream recorded works
NACOGDOCHES, Texas – The Contemporary Ensemble at Stephen F. Austin State University will stream the ensemble’s recorded works on the SFA School of Music’s YouTube Channel at 7 p.m. Thursday, May 2.
To celebrate the opening of the Sound Recording Technology program’s new recording studios in the Griffith Fine Arts Building, the Contemporary Ensemble most recently focused on producing recorded works, according the James Adams, SRT associate professor and director of the Contemporary Ensemble.
McBroom named SFA’s director of athletics
NACOGDOCHES, Texas –– Michael McBroom has been appointed director of athletics at Stephen F. Austin State University by Interim President Gina Oglesbee and The University of Texas System. Currently serving as director of athletics at West Texas A&M University in Canyon, McBroom will officially join the Department of Athletics on May 15.
