FAQ: Applying

Through a traveler relationship management platform, viaTRM, you'll have access to more than 600 study abroad opportunities through SFA, partner universities and other affiliated providers. Regardless of your major, there are opportunities for career development skills, for language immersion, internships and service learning.

Whether you're ready to take the next step in applying or you just want to browse opportunities, viaTRM is a valuable resource. After identifying your goals and understanding your academic needs, you are ready to begin your search.

Applying for an SFA-faculty led program? View the how-to guide!

  • Log on to viaTRM using your mySFA credentials.
    • First-time users will be prompted to complete a profile.
  • Click on "Programs" at the top of your profile page.
  • Begin filtering your search to narrow down opportunities.
    • To view all SFA programs, scroll to the bottom of the filter options and filter "Program Provider".
  • Ready to apply?
    • Select the program in which you'd like to apply.
    • Click "Apply Now" and complete the online application.
      • Note: If you applying for a nonSFA program, there will be a second application once your initial submission is approved by our study abroad coordinator. Details will be provided upon approval.

FAQ: viaTRM

viaTRM Traveler's Dashboard

On the Traveler's Dashboard, you can:

  • See and edit your profile.
  • View and send messages.
  • Keep track of your applications.
  • Find required forms for any programs in which you've been accepted and committed.
  • Explore quick links to your favorite program pages.

Important note: Each application on your Traveler's Dashboard is for a particular term. If you wish to apply for the same program, but in another term, withdraw the application on your dashboard and start a new application for the appropriate term from the program page. You cannot re-submit an expired program application for a future term.

Your next steps will depend on the program type in which you applied. Expand the appropriate selection below to follow the correct checklist.

Faculty-led program

If you applied for an SFA Faculty-led program:

  1. Meet with the faculty member leading the program, if you haven’t done so already. 
  2. Your faculty leader will inform us of their approval decision.
    • Upon approval, your application status in your viaTRM Traveler's Dashboard will change to "Conditionally Approved".  
  3. Log on to your Brightspace by D2L account and complete the "Study Abroad Pre-Departure Orientation" course (approximately 20 minutes).
    • You need a passing grade of at least 80 to move your application status to "Approved". 
  4. Return to your application on your viaTRM Traveler's Dashboard and click the "Commit" button.

Once you have committed to the program, you will be considered a program participant and reservations will be made on your behalf and therefore you will be responsible for program payments. Another set of forms will be added to your viaTRM Traveler's Dashboard and you will be prompted to pay the $50 application fee and start program payments.

Affiliated, direct exchange with partner university, or ISEP

If you applied for an affiliated program, a direct exchange with a partner university, or an ISEP exchange or direct program:

  1. Meet with the study abroad coordinator to discuss your course approval process and financial aid requirements, if you haven’t done so already. .
  2. Submit your course approval form and study abroad financial aid form.
    • The study abroad coordinator will review your forms and make an approval decision.
      • Upon approval, your application status on your viaTRM Traveler's Dashboard will change to "Accepted".
      • You will receive an email from the study abroad coordinator informing you of your application becoming accepted. 
  3. Return to your application on your viaTRM Traveler's Dashboard and click the "Commit" button.
    • Once you have committed to the program, another set of forms will be added to your viaTRM Traveler's Dashboard.
    • You will be prompted to pay the $50 application fee.
  4. Apply to the program you have selected.
    • For most programs, viaTRM will provide a link to the external program website to complete your application.

Once approved by your host university/program coordinator:

  1. Apply for a passport, if you don’t have one.
    • If you do have one, make sure it will not expire before your return.
  2. Apply for a student visa, if applicable.
  3. Get any necessary vaccinations.
  4. Secure housing and health insurance (if not included in program).
  5. Purchase plane tickets (check refund policies).
  6. Submit the remaining application documents.
    • Include your Study Abroad Scholarship application).
  7. Consider purchasing trip insurance or Cancellation for Any Reason insurance.
  8. Attend the pre-departure orientation.
  9. Meet with your SFA study abroad coordinator to review the study abroad placeholder request. 
  10. Meet with your academic advisor to discuss receiving advising early for the following semester. 
  11. Take care of any holds!

Check your email regularly - your host university/program coordinator and SFA study abroad coordinator will use email to contact you regarding important information!
