NACOGDOCHES, Texas –– Stephen F. Austin State University’s School of Music is proud to present a captivating evening of choral music with the "Autumn Impressions" concert, performed by the Chamber Singers. The event will take place at 7:30 p.m. Sept. 30 in Cole Concert Hall.
Directed by Dr. Michael Murphy, professor of conducting and director of choral activities, the concert will feature choral works from a diverse array of composers, including Jan Pieterszoon Sweelinck, Alice Parker, Eric Whitacre, Susan LeBarr, Alessandro Scarlatti, John Bennet, Moses Hogan and others. The program promises an engaging blend of historical and contemporary choral pieces that capture the spirit of the autumn season.
Highlights of the performance include:
- “Exultate Deo” by Alessandro Scarlatti, a festive setting that features contrasting duple and triple meters, showcasing Scarlatti's mastery as one of the most accomplished composers in music history
- “With a Lily in Your Hand” by Eric Whitacre, set to the poetry of the famous Spanish poet Federico Garcia Lorca and contrasting the elemental forces of fire and water
- and “Weep O Mine Eyes” by John Bennet, a renowned madrigal from the English Renaissance, written as a tribute to John Dowland’s famous composition, “Flow My Tears.”
In addition to Murphy's direction, the concert will feature SFA’s talented graduate choral conducting students Joe Alvear, Desteni Granston, Emily LeBlanc and D.J. Provencio. Accompanying the ensemble on piano will be Seohyeon Hwang and Tate Ashby.
