NACOGDOCHES, Texas – The Pineywoods Camerata at Stephen F. Austin State University will perform Baroque music from Germany and Italy when faculty members and students present a recital at 4 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 26, in Cole Concert Hall in the Wright Music Building on the SFA campus.
The Pineywoods Camerata is a string faculty-led, conductorless ensemble dedicated to performing Baroque works with an informed stylistic approach, according to Dr. Jennifer Dalmas, professor of violin at SFA and Camerata member. The group usually performs once each academic year.
“This concert contains a wide variety of music, ranging from some of the most well-known Baroque compositions to the relatively obscure,” Dalmas said.
New faculty member Pablo Moreno Holguin, oboe, will be featured as a soloist on Alessandro Marcello’s Concerto in C minor, one of the best known works of the period for oboe. The concert also features Dr. Minhae Lee, harpsichord, and SFA string students.
Among the other program highlights are “Don Quixote Suite” by Georg Philipp Telemann. “This is a wonderful programmatic piece that the composer wrote as a tribute to Cervantes’ famous novel,” Dalmas said. The piece consists of an overture and six short titled movements in the form of Baroque dances, such as “Don Quixote attacks the Windmills” and “Pining for the Princess Dulcinea.”
The concert also features J.S. Bach’s Brandenburg Concerto No. 3. Bach sent a set of six “Brandenburg” concertos to a nobleman in an attempt to obtain a new court musician position, Dalmas explained. “The pieces weren’t even performed until after his death, but are now some of his best known compositions,” she said.
Francesco Geminiani, one of the most famous violinists of his day, modeled Concerto Grosso No. 12 “La Follia” on works by Arcangello Corelli, who was an important mentor for him, Dalmas said. Concerto No. 12 features a set of variations on the popular dance tune “La Follia.”
