NACOGDOCHES, TEXAS - The Stephen F. Austin State University College of Fine Arts and School of Music will present the Symphonic Band and University Band in a performance titled "ICONS" at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 16, in the Grand Ballroom of the Baker Pattillo Student Center on the SFA campus.
The University Band, under the direction of Associate Director of Bands David W. Campo and graduate assistant conductor Jay Weems, will perform a wide variety of music featuring selections by composers William Owens, Pavel Tchesnokoff, Henry Fillmore and Larry Clark.
"The concert will open with William Owens' 'Carnegie Fanfare,' a tribute to the iconic landmark Carnegie Hall," Campo said.
Next on the program is Pavel Tchesnokov's iconic choral work, "Salvation is Created," transcribed by Bruce Houseknecht. "A Land Remembered," a multi-movement work by American composer Larry Clark, is based on the novel of the same name.
"This concert selection tells the story of pioneering families in the early days of Florida," Campo said. "The piece is set in three continuous movements, each depicting elements of the story. It begins with the opening fanfare, 'A New Life in a New Land,' then continues to the beautiful 'On the Prairie.' The strident final movement is 'Hardships on the Rugged Frontier.'"
The Symphonic Band, under the direction of Assistant Director of Bands Tamey Anglley, will open the second half of the concert with "Shortcut Home" by Dana Wilson.
"Drawing upon various jazz styles, this elaborate fanfare features each section of the ensemble," Anglley said.
Next, the band will perform Larry Daehn's "As Summer Was Just Beginning," conducted by graduate student Steven Reiss.
"The subtitle for this piece is 'Song for James Dean,' and the title comes from the inscription on his bronze bust in Los Angeles, California," Anglley explained.
The band will also perform "Rikudim" by Jan Van der Roost, a four-movement work based on Israeli folk dances.
"However, they are not based on existing folk music," Anglley said, "but on originally composed dances by the composer."
The Symphonic Band will end the concert with "The Black Horse Troop" by famous American composer John Philip Sousa. Originally composed in 1924, it was dedicated to the men and horses of Cleveland's Ohio National Guard, Troop A.
