SFA Music Prep Division hosts All-Region Choir Camp

NACOGDOCHES, TEXAS - The SFA Music Preparatory Division, a divisional school of the Stephen F. Austin State University School of Music, recently sponsored a Region 21 Middle School All-Region Choir Camp in the Tom and Peggy Wright Music Building on the SFA campus.

Nearly 90 middle school students from across East Texas attended the event to receive assistance in learning their music in preparation for All-Region competition.

Among the schools and districts represented were: Hogg Middle School, Boulter Middle School, Hubbard Middle School and Stewart Middle School in Tyler ISD; Mike Moses Middle School and McMichael Middle School in Nacogdoches ISD; Carthage ISD; Lufkin ISD; Hudson ISD; and Palestine ISD.

Clinicians for the event were SFA School of Music faculty members Dr. Tod Fish, Charlotte Davis and Nita Hudson and SFA graduate students Kelsey Holt and Marissa Maddoux.

Nicole Stewart, director of the Music Prep Piney Woods Chorale and director of the McMichael Middle School choir, served as camp director. The Piney Woods Chorale traveled to Disney World in Orlando, Fla., this past June to perform on a Disney stage. The middle school choir camp serves as a scholarship fundraiser for the chorale.

Students in grades 6 through 12 interested in being a part of the Piney Woods Chorale may contact Pat Barnett, director of the SFA Music Preparatory Division, for more information at 936-468-1291 or pbarnett@sfasu.edu.
