Six Stephen F. Austin State University faculty members will be honored for their teaching abilities at the university's annual Teaching Excellence Convocation at 4 p.m. Thursday, April 15, in Regent's Suites A and B of the Baker Pattillo Student Center.
The Teaching Excellence Awards were established in 1994 to honor outstanding classroom teachers at SFA. Each of the university's six colleges selects a member of its faculty to receive the award based on knowledge of subject matter, quality of lectures and assignments, enthusiasm for teaching, interest in and availability to students, commitment to continuous improvement, and contribution to the quality of teaching within SFA through assistance and encouragement of other faculty.
Dr. Tim Clipson, professor of general business, was selected from the Nelson Rusche College of Business. Clipson teaches business communication and office system courses. He received a bachelor's degree from Bethany Nazarene College, a master's degree from the University of North Texas and a Doctor of Education degree from Oklahoma State University.
Dr. Janet Tareilo, assistant professor of secondary education and educational leadership, was selected from the James I. Perkins College of Education. She received bachelor's and master's degrees from SFA and a Doctor of Education degree from Sam Houston State University.
Dr. Alan Nielsen, professor of theatre, was selected from the College of Fine Arts. Nielsen is a teacher, composer, playwright and director. He received a bachelor's degree from Concordia University, a master's degree from the University of Nebraska and a doctorate from City University of New York.
Dr. Michael Fountain, professor of forestry, was selected from the Arthur Temple College of Forestry and Agriculture. Fountain teaches courses in silviculture, dendrology and forest ecology. He received bachelor's and master's degrees from SFA and a doctorate in forest resource science from West Virginia University.
Dr. Dana Cooper, assistant professor of history, was selected from the College of Liberal and Applied Arts. Cooper teaches courses on women in the wars and U.S. history. She received a bachelor's degree from Angelo State University, a master's degree from Texas Tech University and her doctorate from Texas Christian University.
Dr. Roy Joe Harris, associate professor of mathematics, was selected from the College of Sciences and Mathematics. He graduated with a bachelor's degree from SFA and a doctorate in mathematics from Texas A&M University.
A reception for the honorees will begin at 3:30 p.m. followed by the Teaching Excellence Convocation.
