"REFINED VI," the biennial juried art metals and jewelry competition and exhibition hosted by the SFA School of Art, will open at 5 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 30, at The Cole Art Center @ the Old Opera House.

NACOGDOCHES, TEXAS - Art metals and jewelry works by artists from around the world are included in "REFINED VI: Back to Basics," which the Stephen F. Austin State University College of Fine Arts and School of Art will open at 5 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 30, at The Cole Art Center @ The Old Opera House in downtown Nacogdoches.

Each of the pieces was selected by Lisa Gralnick, jeweler and professor of art at the University of Wisconsin, who is serving as juror for the biennial competition and exhibition hosted by the SFA School of Art since 1998.

At 5 p.m., Gralnick will give a gallery talk and announce the winners of the $1,500 in prize money. The reception, scheduled to last until 8 p.m., will follow.

"Back to Basics," the theme of this year's competition, challenged artists to use metalworking and jewelry techniques to both glorify craftsmanship and provide relevant content to their work, explained Christian Cutler, director of SFA galleries.

"Please join us at the opening as we celebrate the many themes and working practices of metalworking artists from across the world," Cutler added.

"REFINED VI," which is displayed upstairs in the Reavley Gallery of The Cole Art Center, will run through Saturday, March 20. Regular gallery hours are 12:30 to 5 p.m., Tuesday through Friday, and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday. Admission is free.
