Ureña to lecture on Central American songs


NACOGDOCHES, TEXAS - Dr. Juan Carlos Ureña, Stephen F. Austin State University assistant professor of modern languages, will give a lecture/demonstration on poetry and music in Central America at 2 p.m. Friday, Oct. 7, in the Music Recital Hall on the SFA campus.

The presentation is part of the SFA School of Music's monthly Robert G. Sidnell Lecture Series in Music Education. The lecture's title, "Trovar: Memoria Poètica de la Conción Hispanoamericana," is the same as Ureña's book from which the lecture material is drawn.

Alternative SFA Homecoming bonfire planned


NACOGDOCHES, Texas - Due to the extreme drought in East Texas, this year's Stephen F. Austin State University Homecoming torchlight parade and bonfire will be modified to ensure safety without dampening the Lumberjack spirit surrounding the annual tradition.

SFA to screen 'Beautiful Losers'


NACOGDOCHES, TEXAS - As part of its monthly independent film series, the Stephen F. Austin State University School of Art will present a free, one-night screening of "Beautiful Losers" at 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 7, at The Cole Art Center @ The Old Opera House in downtown Nacogdoches.

In this 90-minute documentary, directors Aaron Rose and Joshua Leonard follow the lives of 10 artists and designers, many of whom got their start in the early 1990s with little or no formal training.

SFA interior design students study in Chicago

SFA School of Theatre offers grief symposium with 'Rabbit Hole' performances


The Rev. Dr. Brent Peery, director of chaplaincy services at Memorial Hermann Hospital in Houston, will be the keynote speaker during a five-day "Survived By . . ." symposium offered in conjunction with the Stephen F. Austin State University School of Theatre's performances of David Lindsay-Abaire's "Rabbit Hole" on Tuesday, Oct. 4, through Saturday, Oct. 8, in W.M.

Poetry reading, art combine at Art Center


NACOGDOCHES, TEXAS - Dr. Ann Filemyr, creator of the poems included in the fine arts press book "Growing Paradise," will read from the collection at 6 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 29, at The Cole Art Center @ The Old Opera House in downtown Nacogdoches.

The poetry reading is being held in conjunction with Stephen F. Austin State University's exhibition of the book's 18 silkscreen and letterpress prints co-created by local artist Liz Akamatsu and SFA Professor of Art Piero Fenci in response to Filemyr's poems. The exhibition is hung in the upstairs Hallway Gallery.

SFA, Healthy Nacogdoches Coalition announce Walk/Bike to School Day


Project "ALL Jacks Walk/Bike to School Day," designed to encourage SFA students, faculty and staff to walk or ride their bicyces to school will be held on Wednesday, Oct. 5, to promote physical activity in the community.

The Stephen F. Austin State University health science program is partnering with the Healthy Nacogdoches Coalition for a service-learning project called "ALL Jacks Walk/Bike to School Day."
