Portuguese is the world’s sixth most common language with over 230 million heritage speakers. It is the official language of eight countries on four continents, and the third most spoken European language. The largest concentration of 200 million Portuguese speakers can be found in Brazil, Latin America’s industrial and economic superpower. Slightly larger than the continental United States, Brazil holds some of the largest oil reserves in the world and is known for its important biological diversity.
The study of Portuguese is on the rise in the United States. If you want the hottest ticket in international business, Portuguese is for you. Portuguese courses may be used to satisfy the core communication requirement at SFA, as well as the language requirements for Bachelor of Arts degree programs. You can also study Portuguese as an elective or as part of the dual language track as a modern language major.
