Personalized pride
Decorating your axe handle is one of the very first experiences you’ll have when you become a Lumberjack — and it’s one you’ll never forget.
Each year we distribute more than 2,000 axe handles to new students. Every decorated axe handle is a true original that reflects each student’s unique personality. It’s a tradition like no other, and most students keep this symbol of pride throughout their college career and beyond.
Where do I get my axe handle?
You can pick up a free axe handle during the Weeks of Welcome events, and decorate it to reflect your personality during Holler at Homer (an event held the night before our first home football game). Axe handles are also available for purchase at local hardware stores and are usually less than $10.
For more information about Weeks of Welcome, visit our New Student Orientation page.
Axe handle traditions
Your newly decorated axe handle will help you join the fun of Lumberjack athletics. Raise your handle high and rile up the crowd in the Purple Haze section.
Cadences
Join the Cadence by banging your axe on metal in the football stadium's student cheering section. This tradition, which started in the 1970s, lets the whole town know that you’re rooting for the Lumberjacks. And if sports aren’t your thing, your personalized axe handle is a great way to add a little SFA spirit to your room.
