What is work-study?

In the Federal Work-study program, you work part-time to cover any of the associated costs of your educational expenses. Not only does this program help you cover your SFA expenses, in some cases, work-study can open the door to professional experiences and networking opportunities related to your major.

How do I apply?

Filling out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid is the first step if you want to apply for work-study. If you’re interested in the federal work-study program, be sure to answer “yes” to Question 31 on the FAFSA. Learn more about the FAFSA application requirements, process and deadlines on the Applying for Aid page.

How does the program work?

Work-study positions are hourly-wage jobs in which a student works for an employer according to a mutually agreed-upon schedule. If you are enrolled in the work-study program, you can expect to be paid twice a month, and most jobs are in the minimum-wage range. The pay is considered taxable income.

Your financial aid offer will include a limit for the amount you can earn. Typical aid is up to $4,400 for a 9-month academic year.

SFA's Human Resources provides students within an online resource of jobs that will let you review openings and apply for them online.

One thing you should know: HR will help you with your job search, but it doesn’t place you or guarantee you’ll be hired.
