NACOGDOCHES, Texas – The Wind Ensemble at Stephen F. Austin State University will present “Musical Postcards,” a concert featuring a performance by the SFA faculty Pineywoods Brass Quintet, at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 16, in W.M. Turner Auditorium in the Griffith Fine Arts Building, SFA campus.
The Pineywoods Brass Quintet will perform the SFA premiere of “Dust” by composer Jennifer Jolley. SFA joined the consortium for this brass quintet concerto, which is based on the West Texas landscape, climate and history. Quintet members include Dr. Andrea Denis, horn; Dr. Deb Scott, trombone; Dr. J.D. Salas, euphonium; and Drs. Gary Wurtz and Jake Walburn, trumpets.
Directed by Dr. Tamey Anglley, the Wind Ensemble will perform two separate works by composer Frank Ticheli, who recently retired as composition professor at University of Southern California. “Postcard,” written in 1991, was one of Ticheli’s first band compositions. “Apollo Unleashed” is the third movement from his Symphony No. 2, which is one of his most famous compositions. In honor of Ticheli and “the legacy he has left on the wind band world,” Anglley said, the Wind Ensemble will also perform “Let Me Be Frank With You” by John Mackey, which was written in Ticheli’s honor.
The Wind Ensemble will also perform one of the most famous opera transcriptions in the wind band repertoire, “Elsa’s Procession to the Cathedral” from “Lohengrin” by Richard Wagner. “Lohengrin” was originally composed between 1845 and 1848 with Lucien Cailliet completing the band transcription in 1938.
Concert tickets are $8 for adults, $6 for seniors and $3 for students and youth. Visit the SFA Fine Arts Box Office webpage or call (936) 468-6407 for tickets. For additional information, contact the SFA School of Music at (936) 468-4602.
