NACOGDOCHES, Texas – The Wind Ensemble at Stephen F. Austin State University will present its Winter Tour Concert before a hometown crowd after returning to campus following a recruitment tour performing at five high schools in the Dallas area.
Directed by Dr. Tamey Anglley, director of bands at SFA, the Wind Ensemble will perform at 4 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 25, in W.M. Turner Auditorium, Griffith Fine Arts Building, on the SFA campus.
The concert will open with the 2015 Dallas Winds Fanfare Composition Contest winner “Fireworks” by Kevin Day. Joining the ensemble to perform on “The Orion Concerto” by Jenni Brandon will be music faculty members Dr. Jenna Sehmann, oboe, and Dr. Cody Hunter, bassoon. “This shorter version is based on Brandon’s ‘Double Concerto for Oboe and Bassoon with Wind Symphony’ and tells the story of our galaxy, of the great unknown and what lies beyond,” Anglley explained.
Dr. Dan Haddad, associate director of bands at SFA, will guest conduct the Wind Ensemble on “Vanity Fair (A Comedy Overture)” by Percy Fletcher. “Originally written in 1924 for British military band, it is a wonderful example of Fletcher’s light melodic style,” Anglley said.
Assistant Director of Bands Dr. Chris Kaatz will guest conduct “Mary Shelley Meets Frankenstein: A Modern Promethean Tango” by Erika Svanoe. Composed in 2019, Svanoe writes in the program notes: “This piece imagines a scenario where the young author meets her own creation, the monster, whom we colloquially refer to as ‘Frankenstein,’ brought to life. They meet, circling each other in a dance reflective of a tango.”
The concert will also feature pieces by composers Clifton Williams, Omar Thomas and Karl King.
Concert tickets are $8 for adults, $6 for seniors and $3 for students and youth. To purchase tickets, visit the SFA Fine Arts Box Office website or call (936) 468-6407. For additional information, contact the SFA School of Music at (936) 468-4602.
