Axe ’Em, Jacks!
NACOGDOCHES, Texas – The Trombone Choir at Stephen F. Austin State University will present classical music from three eras when the student ensemble performs at 7:30 p.m. Monday, April 17, in Cole Concert Hall on the SFA campus.
The program will feature works from the Renaissance era, the Classical period and the 20th century, according to Dr. Deb Scott, professor of trombone at SFA.
The concert will open with a Renaissance era selection from the first early music major composer for brass, Giovanni Gabrieli. Adjunct trombone Professor Luke Vacca will conduct Gabrieli’s Canzon septimi toni no. 2, arranged by David Waters.
From the Classical era, Felix Mendelssohn’s “Holy is God the Lord,” arranged by Allen Ostrander, will be conducted by Scott.
The concert will conclude with a 20th century favorite from Gustav Holst’s “The Planets,” a seven-movement orchestral suite. “Mars, the Bringer of War” will feature the timpani. “It is an impressive, loud and energetic movement arrangement that works well for trombone choir,” Scott said.
The choir is a 25-member ensemble that will also feature smaller ensembles within the concert that include quartets and a trio, along with a jazz octet that will perform an arrangement of Hoagy Carmichael’s “Stardust” by Dick Lieb, conducted by Scott.
