SFA’s Swingin’ Axes, Aces to present works by Tamaro, Nestico, other jazz greats


NACOGDOCHES, Texas – The Swingin’ Axes and Swingin’ Aces jazz bands at Stephen F. Austin State University will perform works by Mike Tamaro, Sammy Nestico, Alan Baylock and other jazz legends when the ensembles take the stage at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Feb. 24, in Cole Concert Hall on the SFA campus.
 
“This is the opening jazz ensemble concert of the spring 2023 semester and will feature some great standards in addition to more recent compositions for jazz ensemble,” said Dr. J.D. Salas, director of jazz studies at SFA and director of the Swingin’ Axes.
 
The Swingin’ Axes will perform “Rivers” by Mike Tamaro; “Us” by Thad Jones; “JEN-TEN” by Greg Yasinitsky; and “But Beautiful” by Lennie Niehaus.
 
The Swingin’ Aces, directed by Dr. Jake Walburn, will perform “Dindi” by Antonio Carlos Jobim; “Things Are Getting Better” by Julian Adderly; “Swampwater Blues” by Les Hooper; “Two Seconds to Midnight” by Alan Baylock; and “Tribute to the Count” by Sammy Nestico.
