NACOGDOCHES, Texas — Dr. John Allen Hendricks, chair and professor of Stephen F. Austin State University’s Department of Mass Communication, received the 2022 Broadcast Education Association’s Book Award for “Radio’s Second Century: Past, Present, and Future Perspectives” published by Rutgers University Press. He was presented the award in April at the BEA’s 2022 conference held in Las Vegas.

“‘Radio’s Second Century’ is the culmination of hard work of many talented radio and audio scholars, and I am very honored and humbled that BEA found the book worthy of the award this year — the year in which radio’s 100th anniversary was celebrated at the conference,” Hendricks said.

According to the BEA, the book contributes to the field of broadcasting and mass communication by bringing together top scholars to examine a variety of topics, including influences of on-air personalities, audience behavior, fan relationships, impact of social and digital media, regulatory challenges, and the cultural impact of radio, both in the U.S. and abroad.

Hendricks’ research interests intersect the broadcasting industry, social media and new media technologies, and political communication. He has authored and edited 12 books, including “The Radio Station: Broadcasting, Podcasting, and Streaming,” “The Palgrave Handbook of Global Radio,” “The 21st Century Media: Economic and Managerial Implications in the Age of New Media,” and “Social Media and Strategic Communications.”

His book, “Communicator-in-Chief: How Barack Obama Used New Media Technology to Win the White House,” was the recipient of the National Communication Association’s Applied Research Division’s Distinguished Scholarly Book Award in 2011.

The BEA Book Award was established in 2020 to recognize an outstanding book written by BEA members in the field of broadcasting and mass communication. BEA is the professional association for professors, industry professionals and graduate students interested in teaching and research related to electronic media and multimedia enterprises.
