NACOGDOCHES, Texas - Join Nacogdoches Naturally on Saturday, Feb. 9, for a day trip to Ragtown Recreation Area in the Sabine National Forest.

Individuals and families wishing to participate should meet at 8 a.m. at SFA's Pineywoods Native Plant Center, 2900 Raguet St. Participants may ride in SFA vans or caravan in their own vehicles to the recreation area located in Shelby County. Travel time is approximately one hour, and the estimated return time is 4 p.m.

Located on the Texas shore of Toledo Bend and operated by the Sabine River Authority of Texas, Ragtown Recreation Area offers something for everyone: hiking, fishing, bird watching and viewing nature at its best. The recreation area is nestled high on a bluff that faces east and is surrounded by southern pine and hardwood trees

"Our group will hike 'Mother Nature's Hiking Trail,' which loops around the campground for one mile and offers opportunities for bird watching and observing the wonders of nature in late winter," project director Kerry Lemon said. "There will also be time for fishing, and a picnic lunch will be provided."

Nacogdoches Naturally Family Outdoor Adventures is a project sponsored by SFA Gardens and funded through a "More Kids in the Woods" grant from the U.S. Department of Agriculture-U.S. Forest Service. Activities are designed to cultivate outdoor skills and an awareness of forest ecology with the goal of families developing a lifetime appreciation of the natural world. Programs are family friendly and appropriate for all ages.

Cost for the event is $15 for families using their personal vehicles. If SFA van transportation is needed, the cost will be $25 per family. The registration deadline for the event is Thursday, Feb. 7. Space will be limited, so early registration is recommended.
