NACOGDOCHES, TEXAS - Stephen F. Austin State University College of Fine Arts and School of Music will present "Sing!" - a concert by Choral Union and Women's Choir of new and old mini-masterpieces - at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 30, in Cole Concert Hall in the Tom and Peggy Wright Music Building on the SFA campus.
Earlier this month, Choral Union performed with SFA's Orchestra of the Pines, and the group was invited to perform with the Turtle Creek Chorale in the Meyerson Symphony Center in Dallas.
"'Sing!' is something of a sampler concert of favorite choral works new and old," said David Howard, associate director of choral activities and the choirs' director. "Choral Union will perform pieces featured on our concerts with Orchestra of the Pines and with the Turtle Creek Chorale in Dallas, while Women's Choir will perform a largely unaccompanied program of exciting contemporary works."
Among the pieces featured in "Sing!" are G.F. Handel's Zadok the Priest, which is often sung at coronations, Hubert Hastings Parry's "I Was Glad," sung at the royal wedding, Johann Hasse's "Benigne fac" from Miserere in C Minor and Jonathan Dove's It sounded as if the Street were running.
Accompanying the Choral Union will be pianist Geneva Fung, and accompanying the Women's Choir will be graduate student and pianist Bruno Ribeiro along with a string quartet.
Choral Union is an auditioned 75-voice mixed chorus comprised of music majors and talented non-music majors at SFA. The Choral Union performs a wide range of repertoire from renaissance polyphony to contemporary unaccompanied works.
The Women's Choir is a 20-voice ensemble of music and non-music majors at SFA. The Women's Choir affords female singers the opportunity to explore treble repertoire from the last 500 years with a special emphasis on contemporary works.
The performances are part of the College of Fine Arts and School of Music's Concert Series. Tickets are $5 for adults, $4 for seniors and $2 for students. For tickets or more information, call (936) 468-6407 or visit www.finearts.sfasu.edu.
