NACOGDOCHES, TEXAS - Two guest musicians will be presenting programs this week as part of the Stephen F. Austin State University School of Music's Cole Performing Arts Series.
Robert Levy, well known trumpeter, conductor, teacher, composer and recording artist, will deliver a lecture, "The Life and Music of Alec Wilder," at 7:30 p.m. Monday, Jan. 23, in the Music Recital Hall, Room 160 of the Wright Music Building.
Interspersed with Levy's discussion of the 20th century American composer whose songs have been recorded by artists such as Frank Sinatra, Benny Goodman, Ella Fitzgerald, Miles Davis and Carly Simon, will be performances of Wilder's music by SFA student ensembles.
On Tuesday, Jan. 24, members of the SFA music faculty will present "The Music of Alec Wilder," a concert that will demonstrate the variety and breadth of Wilder's music, explained Dr. Charles Gavin, SFA professor of music. The 7:30 p.m. concert will be held in Cole Concert Hall of the Wright Music Building.
Guest bassoonist Paula Brusky will present a recital of Australian and new bassoon works at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 26, in Cole Concert Hall. Joining Brusky will be pianist Geneva Fung, SFA staff accompanist; and violist Eliza Thomason, director of strings and assistant professor at Texas Lutheran University.
Brusky, who completed her doctoral degree in bassoon performance at the Sydney (Australia) Conservatorium of Music and teaches at the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh, is also a published researcher specializing in injury prevention for musicians. She will give a lecture/workshop on this subject from 2 to 4:30 p.m. Friday, Jan. 27, in the Music Recital Hall.
