SFA Theatre to present student-directed 'Stop Kiss'

NACOGDOCHES, TEXAS - The Stephen F. Austin State University School of Theatre will present a student-directed production of Diana Son's "Stop Kiss" at 7:30 p.m. Friday, April 8, and at 2 and 7:30 p.m. Saturday, April 9. All performances will be in the Downstage Theatre located on the first floor of the Griffith Fine Arts Building, 2222 Alumni Dr. on the SFA campus.

Son's full-length play follows the tragic tale of two women who are assaulted when a bystander witnesses their shared kiss. "This play exposes the lives of those abused and harassed by bullies and shows the world that with time and love, everything will be okay," said director Miguel Maymí-Malavé, Copperas Cove senior.

Houston senior Emma Palizza and La Port freshman Shelby Bray play the lead characters. Other cast members are La Porte senior Eddie Edge; juniors Lindsay Love of White Oak and Nick Negron of Kingwood; and Houston sophomore Kurt Bilanoski.

Previous SFA directing credits for Maymí-Malavé include "The Other Son" and "A Life With No Joy In It." He has assistant directed "The Adventures of Homer McGundy, Revised," "Woyzeck" and The Original Cast's "Blowin' in the Wind."

He designed the lights for "She Stoops to Conquer," "Coffee and John" and for The Original Cast from 2008 to 2010. His scenic design credits include "Blowin' in the Wind," "Old Saybrook" and "Animal Keepers."

He recently served as the dramaturg for the New York-based Phoenix Theatre Ensemble's production of "Silent Partners."
