SFA to stage student-directed 'Tom and Jerry'

NACOGDOCHES, TEXAS - The Stephen F. Austin State University School of Theatre will present a student-directed production of Jim Geoghan's "Tom and Jerry" at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Feb. 18, and at 2 and 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 19. All performances are in the Downstage Theatre located on the first floor of the Griffith Fine Arts Building.

The one-act, taken from Geoghan's collection "Only Kidding," offers an inside look at the life of a stand-up comedian. As the play's director, Weslaco junior Jonathan Garcia, explains, the audience gets the feeling that it isn't all laughs when comedians meet.

The play is recommended for mature audiences.

Fort Worth sophomore Jarret Jackson and Richards freshman Jacob Saffle play comedians Tom and Jerry, respectively. Port Neches freshman Josh Birdsong plays Sal, the bar owner.

Garcia's previous SFA directing credits include "The Interrogation," "A Florentine Tragedy," "The Philadelphia" and "Wolfie," which he assistant directed.

He has appeared in SFA's productions of "How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying," "Almost, Maine," "Woyzeck," "The Adventures of Homer McGundy, Revised" and "Bad Boy Nietzsche." Garcia has also been a member of The Original Cast since 2009.

Tickets for "Tom and Jerry" are $3 each. For tickets or more information, please call (936) 468-6407 or (888) 240-ARTS.
