NACOGDOCHES, TEXAS - String and piano students from across the state are invited to register for a one-week camp being presented by the Stephen F. Austin State University School of Music Sunday, July 10, through Friday, July 15, on the university campus.
"Every day strings and piano students will be immersed in quality music making in group, one-on-one and master class situations," said Gene Moon, SFA director of orchestral activities and the camp. "They will have the unique opportunity to interact with the SFA faculty and guest artists as well as SFA college music majors who make the camp an enriching experience."
The camp will culminate in a concert at 3 p.m. Friday, July 15.
This year marks the first combined camp for the two groups of musicians. Throughout its history, the strings camp has served students from throughout Texas and neighboring states. With a growing interest for a piano camp, the School of Music decided to host a concurrent piano camp, Moon explained.
Faculty will help piano campers improve the memorized performance piece they bring to camp and also work with them on additional solo works or concerti.
New this year to the strings camp is an optional concerto competition for which faculty have chosen a particular movement from a selected concerto for each instrument. From all of the students participating in the opening-day competition, judges will select one musician for each instrument to perform with the camp orchestra during the final concert.
The camp is open to junior high and high school students who can either stay on campus all week or register as commuters with an optional meal plan. Scholarships are available for those who qualify.
