SFA bands to present 'The Legacy of Howard Hanson'


NACOGDOCHES, TEXAS - The Stephen F. Austin State University College of Fine Arts and School of Music will present the Wind Symphony and Symphonic Band in a joint concert at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 12, in W.M. Turner Auditorium on the SFA campus.

Titled "The Legacy of Howard Hanson," the concert celebrates one of the most important figures in American music, said Brett A. Richardson, SFA assistant director of bands. The program will include compositions by Hanson as well as by his pupils Clifton Williams and Francis McBeth.

Under Richardson's baton, the Symphonic Band will open the concert with pieces by Ron Nelson and Steve Bryant and "Dress Parade," a new march edition by former East Texas band director Waymon Bullock. The Symphonic Band will also perform McBeth's "Chant and Jubilo," guest conducted by David W. Campo, SFA associate director of bands.

The Wind Symphony, conducted by Campo, will present Hanson's "Chorale and Alleluia" and McBeth's "Of Sailor and Whales." The band will also perform Williams' "The Ramparts" and a piece by Williams' student John Barnes Chance, "Elegy."
