SFA art galleries closed for part of Thanksgiving break


NACOGDOCHES, TEXAS - Art galleries operated by the Stephen F. Austin State University School of Art will be closed Wednesday, Nov. 24, through Friday, Nov. 26, for the Thanksgiving holidays.

The Cole Art Center @ The Old Opera House will be open as usual on Saturday, Nov. 27, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Currently on display in the downstairs Ledbetter Gallery at The Cole Art Center is "Fabric of African Culture," an exhibition that includes African textiles, artifacts, sculptures and ceremonial articles spanning 500 years. The show runs through Saturday, Jan. 15.

Patrons can also view "Hive" in the Upstairs Hallway of The Art Center. The exhibition of hexagonal shaped paintings made with beeswax, resin and pigment infused with heat will be on display through Friday, Dec. 10.

Regular hours for The Cole Art Center are 12:30 to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday, and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday.

Griffith Gallery, located in Room 208 of the Griffith Fine Arts Building on the SFA campus, is normally open from 12:30 to 5 p.m., Tuesday through Friday. Due to SFA's holiday schedule for Thanksgiving week, the gallery will be open only on Tuesday, Nov. 23. It will reopen as usual on Tuesday, Nov. 30.

Currently on display in that gallery is "A Forest Insect Alphabet," an exhibition of woodcuts and text included in a book of the same title recently printed and bound by SFA's LaNana Creek Press. Charles Jones, retired SFA professor of art and the director of the fine arts press, created the woodcuts of each insect. Dr. David Kulhavy, SFA professor of forestry who is commonly known as "Dr. Bug" because of his presentations on insects, wrote the text.

"A Forest Insect Alphabet" will run through Friday, Feb. 4.
