NACOGDOCHES, TEXAS - Two Nacogdoches artists will be featured in "Metal Heart: Selected Works of Elizabeth Akamatsu and Lauren McAdams," an exhibition in the Beatrice M. Haggerty Art Gallery at the University of Dallas from Friday, Oct. 8, through Sunday, Nov. 7.
Akamatsu, a full-time studio artist, and McAdams, an assistant professor of art metal/jewelry at Stephen F. Austin State University, separately submitted their portfolios to the gallery's exhibition committee. It was not until after they had each been accepted for a two-person show that they learned they would be exhibiting together.
The director of the gallery, Courtney Miles, said the women's metal works were chosen for the shared show because both of the artists "create work that is self-reflective."
Akamatsu speculates that she and McAdams were asked to show together because they both create very detail-oriented work. "Although many of our pieces are large by metalsmithing standards, we approach each work like a piece of jewelry. Our sculptures speak of the beauty of metal."
"I admire Liz's works and it's an honor to share this exhibition with our viewers," said McAdams. "I hope our viewers walk away with the consideration of diverse concepts, the visual power of metal and our love for craftsmanship."
Both artists will be present for the exhibition's opening reception on Friday, Oct. 15, during which McAdams will give a gallery talk.
Haggerty Gallery is located in the Art History Building on the University of Dallas campus, 1845 E. Northgate Dr. Gallery hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday, and noon to 5 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday.
