NACOGDOCHES, TEXAS - The SFA Wind Ensemble will present a concert, "Contrasts: Old vs. New," at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 3, in W.M. Turner Auditorium.

This concert is a prelude to two upcoming performances for two very different audiences, explained Fred J. Allen, SFA director of bands and of the Wind Ensemble.

"In a few weeks we will be featured in a concert of traditional band music at the South Central Regional Music Conference in Monroe, La. The next day, we will perform a concert of new works for the National Association of Composers meeting here at SFA," Allen continued. "So this concert showcases a mix of traditional and brand new music."

Pieces from the standard repertoire include "Festive Overture" by Dmitri Shostakovich, "Aegean Festival Overture" by Andreas Makris and H. Owen Reed's "Michigan Morn," featuring Bruce Fowler, SFA assistant professor of voice.

"This is a great opportunity to showcase professor Fowler's beautiful tenor voice," said Dr. David W. Campo, SFA associate director of bands who will guest conduct the piece during the Feb. 3 concert and again in Monroe. "Fowler is from Monroe, so this will be quite a homecoming for him."

Newer works to be performed on Feb. 3 and again for the composers' conference include works by two living American composers: "Bali" by Michael Colgrass and "Serenade Romantic" by Joseph Turrin.

The concert is joint presentation of the SFA College of Fine Arts and School of Music. Turner Auditorium is located in the Griffith Fine Arts Building, 2222 Alumni Dr. on the SFA campus.
