SFA to stage student-directed 'The Weir'


NACOGDOCHES, TEXAS - The SFA College of Fine Arts and School of Theatre will present a student production of Conor McPherson's "The Weir" at 7:30 p.m. Friday, April 17, and at 2 and 7:30 p.m. Saturday, April 18. All shows are in the Downstage Theatre of the Griffith Fine Arts Building, 2222 Alumni Dr.

The full-length drama tells the story of a dissatisfied man whose life is completely and irrevocably changed by the tragedy of a woman. Set in rural northwest Ireland, "The Weir" employs the old Irish tradition of the storyteller's drama, incorporating legends, rumors and stories the characters tell one another. It is recommended for mature audiences only.

Austin senior Nate Reid directs the cast that includes Sugar Land freshman Allen Titel, Sugar Land junior Blake Weir, and seniors Faye Ann Austin of Fort Worth, Jason Zednick of Jacksonville and Sean Fitzpatrick of Tulsa, Okla.

Round Rock junior Kelsey McMillan serves as assistant director, Canyon Lake senior Randy Hill as stage manager, and Richmond senior Chelsea O'Dell and Sugar Land freshman Chloe Westfall as assistant stage managers.

Previously at SFA, Reid has directed "The Rising of the Moon" and "Ballerinas." His SFA acting credits include "Big River," "This Day Forward," "The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie," "As You Like It," "Lend Me a Tenor," "Tintypes," "The Servant of Two Masters" and "States of Grace."
