SFA Madrigal Singers to perform

The SFA Madrigal Singers will perform music spanning six centuries at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 10, in Cole Concert Hall on the SFA campus.

NACOGDOCHES, TEXAS - The SFA Madrigal Singers, an elite group of 16 vocalists, will present a concert of chamber music at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 10, in Cole Concert Hall on the SFA campus.

The program reflects the group's commitment to perform music from six centuries, explained Dr. Tim King, SFA director of choral activities and the group's director. "The audience will get a sense of that six hundred-year span as the ensemble performs Jackson Berkey's 'Arma Lucis.' The a cappella (unaccompanied) work explores and combines vocal writing techniques from Gregorian chant to the 20th century."

Also included on the program are three Italian Madrigals by the 17th-century composer Henry Schütz, a repertoire King says is seldom performed because of its vocal difficulty.

The Madrigal Singers will also present Jaakko Mäntyjärvi's "Four Shakespeare Songs," a work that blends Renaissance poetry with varied and demanding contemporary music, according to King.

The concert is a joint presentation of the SFA College of Fine Arts and School of Music. Cole Concert Hall is located at 2210 Alumni Dr.

Tickets for the concert are $5 for adults, $4 for seniors and $2 for students. For tickets or more information, please visit www.finearts.sfasu.edu or call (936) 468-6407 or (888) 240-ARTS.
