SFA Bands to present joint concert

NACOGDOCHES, TEXAS - The Stephen F. Austin State University College of Fine Arts and School of Music will present the Wind Symphony and Symphonic Band in a joint concert at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 10, in Cole Concert Hall, 2210 Alumni Dr., on the SFA campus.

The Symphonic Band will open the concert with Fred Jewell's "Quality Plus" march, conducted by Steve Moreland, former SFA drum major and Hallsville graduate student. Brett A. Richardson, SFA assistant director of bands will then take the baton to conduct a new band transcription of Ralph Vaughan Williams' "Fantasia on a Theme by Thomas Tallis."

"The 'Fantasia' was brought to recent prominence by its frequent use in Russell Crowe's epic film, 'Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World,'" said Richardson. "This new edition was long overdue and will hopefully become a welcome addition to the band repertoire."

The Symphonic Band will close its portion of the program with the first three movements of Clifton Williams' "Symphonic Suite," a work that was given the prestigious Ostwald Award by the American Bandmasters Association.

Under the direction of David W. Campo, SFA associate director of bands, the Wind Symphony will present for its portion of the program "Wind Band Classics," a selection of works form the standard wind band repertoire.

The band's first number will be Gustav Holst's 1911 "Second Suite in F, " a four-movement work that uses English folk songs as its basis, followed by Richard Franko's transcription of "Salvation is Created," a sacred choral work composed by Pavel Tchesnokov.

The Wind Symphony will also present a new composition by Mark Lewis, "Infinite Express."

"This piece, which Lewis describes as his attempt to 'make the listener feel like he's been dropped into the middle of something,' is destined to become a wind band classic," Campo said.
