"The Old One," a 12.5" by 36" oil on masonite completed by Michael Frary in 1954, is included in "Texas Modernists: Selections from the Collection of Carl R. McQueary," which will open at SFA's The Cole Art Center @ The Old Opera House Friday, Nov. 21.

NACOGDOCHES, TEXAS - The Stephen F. Austin State University College of Fine Arts, School of Art and University Series will open "Texas Modernists: Selections from the Collection of Carl R. McQueary" at 5 p.m. Friday, Nov. 21, in the Ledbetter Gallery of The Cole Art Center @ The Old Opera House, 329 E. Main St., in downtown Nacogdoches.

McQueary will speak at 5 p.m. about his collection of paintings, sculptures and ceramics that illustrate the evolution of the Modernist movement in Texas art. Immediately following, Nacogdoches Junior Forum will host an opening reception.

"Over the past six months, it has been a pleasure getting to know Carl and his collection," said Christian Cutler, SFA director of galleries. "His keen eye has allowed him to amass an impressive, comprehensive collection that showcases the distinctive qualities associated with Texas Modernism. We are privileged to have these mid-century works of art on display in Nacogdoches."

The exhibition, which will run through Sunday, March 8, includes works by leading Texas modernists such as Cecil Casebier, Kelly Fearing, Michael Frary, Paul Hatgil, William Hoey, Amy Freeman Lee, William Lester, Bert Rees, Don Snell, Ed Storms, Donald Weisman and Ralph White.

"Texas Modernists" is sponsored in part by Wachovia Securities, the SFA Friends of the Visual Arts and Nacogdoches Junior Forum.
