SFA to screen 'Searching for Sugar Man'
August 27, 2013
NACOGDOCHES, TEXAS - As part of its monthly independent film series, the Stephen F. Austin State University School of Art and Friends of the Visual Arts will present a free, one-night screening of "Searching for Sugar Man" at 7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 6, at The Cole Art Center @ The Old Opera House.
"Searching for Sugar Man" is a documentary film directed by Malik Bendjelloul. It details the efforts of two Cape Town fans in the late 1990s, Stephen 'Sugar' Segerman and Craig Bartholomew Strydom, to find out whether the rumored death of American musician Sixto Rodriguez was true, and, if not, to discover what had become of him, according to information found at Wikipedia, the online encyclopedia. Rodriguez's music, which never took off in the United States, had become wildly popular in South Africa, but little was known about him there.
The film won the 2013 Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature and the 2013 British Academy of Film and Television Award for Best Documentary.
Rated PG-13, the 87-minute film is also sponsored in part by the Nacogdoches Junior Forum. Some material may be inappropriate for children under 13, and there is brief strong language and some drug references.
Prior to the screening, a film written and directed by SFA cinematography student Ricky Kennedy will be shown. "In the Original Geek" was featured at the Nacogdoches Film Festival.
The Cole Art Center is located at 329 E. Main St. in downtown Nacogdoches. For additional information, call (936) 468-1131.
