Nacogdoches Naturally plans field trip to Texas Forestry Museum

January 7, 2013

NACOGDOCHES, Texas - Join Nacogdoches Naturally Family Outdoor Adventures for a field trip to the Texas Forestry Museum in Lufkin on Saturday, Jan. 12.

This event provides an opportunity for families to learn about the area's rich history and to contribute to the community through an outdoor family service project at the museum. Participants will leave from the SFA Pineywoods Native Plant Center, 2900 Raguet St., at 9 a.m. and will return at approximately 1 p.m.

Texas Forestry Museum exhibits focus on stories of the people, places and products of the Pineywoods. Sawmills, logging railroads and modern forest management have all influenced East Texas culture, and the 14 million acres of the East Texas Pineywoods remain important to Texas. The museum has an extensive collection of permanent and temporary exhibits to be enjoyed by the visiting families.

"This is our first outing for families that includes a community service project," said Kerry Lemon, project director. "We hope that giving children the opportunity to work with their parents on a project like this will help them develop an understanding of the value of service. Our community benefits greatly from Forest Service programs and facilities; this is a way to give back."

A light lunch will be provided by Nacogdoches Naturally.

Nacogdoches Naturally Family Outdoor Adventures is a project sponsored by SFA Gardens and funded through a More Kids in the Woods grant from the U.S. Department of Agriculture - U.S. Forest Service. Activities are designed to cultivate outdoor skills and an awareness of forest ecology with the goal of families developing a lifelong appreciation of the natural world. Programs are family friendly and appropriate for all ages.

Cost for the event is $15 for each family using a personal vehicle. If SFA van transportation is needed, the cost will be $25 per family. The registration deadline for the Saturday event is Thursday, Jan. 10.
