June 26, 2012

NACOGDOCHES, TEXAS - The art and science of origami are explored in the award-winning documentary "Between the Folds," which the Stephen F. Austin State University School of Art and Friends of the Visual Arts will screen at 7 p.m. Friday, July 6, at The Cole Art Center @ The Old Opera House in downtown Nacogdoches.

The free, one-night screening is part of the School of Art's First Friday Film Series.

Vanessa Gould's 56-minute documentary focuses on 10 acclaimed paperfolders, including three of the world's leading origami artists as well as a mathematician and a scientist who received the MacArthur "Genius" Award for his origami research.

The 56-minute documentary was accepted for more than 45 film festivals, receiving the Audience Award at the Brooklyn, Mendocino, New Hampshire and Rhode Island festivals; and Best Documentary at Cinema Society of San Diego and the Indie Spirit festivals.

The film also earned a Peabody Award (which recognizes excellence, distinguished achievement and meritorious public service in electronic media) in 2010 when it was shown as part of PBS's 2010 Independent Lens series.

According to the series' website, the film "shows how closely art and science are intertwined. The medium of paper folding-a simple, blank, uncut square-emerges as a resounding metaphor for the creative potential for transformation in all of us."
