SFA's The Big Event set to give back in a big way
March 10, 2011
Have you been looking for help with those household projects? What about a few extra workers to help paint a shed or clean up your garden? Stephen F. Austin State University is looking for service projects throughout the Nacogdoches area to coincide with The BIG Event.
The third annual day of service will be held from 2 to 6 p.m. Friday, April 29. Residents, businesses and non-profit organizations are encouraged to participate by submitting job request forms to The BIG Event planning committee. Examples of past jobs include yard work, interior and exterior painting, window washing, and many more. Projects should take approximately four hours to complete by a group of six or more students.
Job request forms can be found at the Nacogdoches Chamber of Commerce and online at www.sfasu.edu/thebigevent. Forms are due by midnight Friday, March 18, and no job requests will be taken over the phone. All potential job sites will be visited by members of The BIG Event planning committee for assessment.
"The BIG Event is a great way for students to interact with the community," said Jamie Bouldin, SFA assistant director for leadership and service. "It is a unique way for students to participate in community service here at SFA."
Job requests are not based on socio-economic need.
"We invite project requests from anyone who could use a couple of extra hands for an afternoon, no matter what their income level or status," Bouldin said. Requestors also will be asked about the amount of supplies they are able to provide, as SFA is limited on the amount of supplies it can provide.
Applicants will be notified by April 19 of whether or not their job will be fulfilled during The BIG Event.
"Unfortunately, due to budget constraints, as well as the consideration of safety for our students, we cannot accept all jobs," Bouldin said.
